Hello again everyone!

I just wanted to share my experience of using DMSO in a cow with staph aureus

mastitis. Here's the low-down written as simply as I could manage:

I cultured the cow on 6/17 and she was positive for staph aureus in the right

rear (RR) quarter of her udder. The other 3 were non-staph a. After discussing

treatment options with my vet, we decided to use an intramammary infusion which

contained the antibiotic pirlimycin hydrochloride (AKA:Pirsue) in all 4 quarters

1x/day for 2 days, and for an extended 6 days beyond this in the RR quarter (8

days total) as per the label instructions. Upon the advice from those more

familiar with DMSO and with many difficult hours spent looking for information

online, I decided to add DMSO to her treatment plan. I didn't exactly follow a

set in stone amount of DMSO/day/quarter as I was sort of flyin' by the seat of

my pants. On 6/28 I started by putting 5cc of DMSO along with the 10cc of

Pirsue into each of the 3 un-infected quarters for the two days of treatment.

That was consistent. The RR quarter started out with 10cc DMSO and 10cc Pirsue

for the first 3 days, then 8cc DMSO and 10cc Piruse for the next 3 days, and

finally 5cc DMSO and 10cc Pirsue for the last 2 days.

One week later, I re-cultured the whole udder and results showed no staph a in

any of her quarters. I repeated the culture 5 days later (7/20) on the RR

quarter and again got 'no growth'.

I'm not out of the woods yet, but it appears that the antibiotic along with the

DMSO just MIGHT have cured my cow of a very difficult cootie to get rid of!

What a shame that the dairy industry is not allowed to use something that could

extend the productive life of an otherwise healthy dairy cow!! Thanks to all of

you who posted encouragement - from me AND my Guernsey girl! :)
