Guest guest
Hi Dena- These decisions are so tough on family. I was faced with this with my dad, actually 2 times. The first time I was alone with no one to ask. I opted for the PEG tube and dad lived on for another 2 1/2 years. He was no where near what your Aunt is going through. The second time there was an emergency meeting called. Thankfully I had phoned my brother and he made it to the hospital in time for the meeting. I opted for no feeding tube, no IV fluids, and to allow my dad some dignity in his last decisions. The doctor and my brother agreed with me. Our thoughts and logic was... " what would we gain " . More days in the life of hell, more pain, maybe even just a few hours of living so we here on earth could struggle with letting go. My feelings and opinion are that there are times when we need to set our own struggles aside and allow life a chance to take it's course. Tough decision, yes! The hardest decision I have ever had to make, yes! Comforted in knowing my dad was no longer struggling for every breath and that he was released from the horrific battles of LBD, yes! It is a personal decision for sure. I shall add some extra prayers for your family in the days they are facing. Heartfelt hugs- Sandie and Des Moines, IA -- Off Topic Hi Everyone This case does not deal with LBD so please do not read if your don't have the time or energy to think about one more thing. I know how that is because I am there now. My Aunt who is 81 years old and has been married to my Uncle for 57 years is dying. She has lung disease, congestive heart failure, bed sores, internal bleeding, she is 5'7 and weighs 84lbs now. She is too weak to sit up and cannot live without a C bap mask(I am not sure of the name, so forgive me) They were to try a PEG tube two days ago, but she is too weak to do so. She has already been on life support once and they wanted to do it again today, but family declined. The question is this, my Uncle and his son(an attorney) want to discontinue even the mask that she must wear to breath. Her daughter thinks this is wrong and will be like putting your dog down when they can no longer live a productive life. What do you all think? I am not sure if she can make that decision for herself at this point. She is sedated and on pain meds for most of the day and night. She has been in the hosp for 3 weeks now and improves a little and then just gets worse again. Just one more reason we should all have advanced directives or at least make our wishes know to our loved ones. This was a subject that they never wanted to discuss, now it may be too late. Thanks for you thoughts Dena Mother (83) End stages LBD On longer on hospice and is very stable in the disease __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Hi Dena- Thank you so much for writing this update. This took me to 2 years ago when my dear Uncle had had a stroke and never came home. My dad passed away Sept. 2002, cousin Joe May 2003, Uncle Jim (Joe's dad) Oct. 2004, Uncle Mel Nov. 2005. The last of the Uncles last year, all of dad's brothers. My heart will be with you, your Uncle and your cousins as you face the next few days. We shall continue to send up prayers for your family from your mom to your Aunt and Uncle. As time permits please let us know how you are doing and all that life has sent your way. Please find comfort in knowing there are many people, through this group, that are sending up prayers. There is definite power there. Many heartfelt hugs- Sandie and Des Moines, IA -- Off Topic Hi Everyone I've had a very busy weekend, but I wanted to get back to you all regarding my Aunt. A special " Thank You " to Dorene, Jan, Joen, Stevie, Vallerie, Courage Cowie, Sandie Pearce, , Sharon, Jacqui, and Donna R. You had so many great suggestions and prayers I truly, truly appreciate each and everyone. Well, on Friday night they put my Aunt back on the breathing tube, basically life support. I really had thought they decided not to do it, but they changed their minds at the last minute. My Aunt looks peaceful and they are giving her morphine now too. I believe Jan suggested Hospice and I mentioned it to my Uncle tonight. He will ask the Dr. about it in the morning. He thought it was a great idea too. It was sooo hard to watch her struggle to breathe with the C-Pap mask on and at least now she seems much more at ease. I think everyone knows now that she will not come home, nor live much longer. Even the Dr. seemed like he thought the breathing tube would be the right thing to do. So it is done now and they will beginning to wean her off of it slowly tomorrow. It is awful watching someone die this way. My Uncle asked me to be with him when she passes if neither one of his kids are here. One lives in San Diego and the other near Sacramento. They are very support of their Dad, but they just live a distance away. His son is an attorney and his daughter is a high school principal, jobs that are not easily missed. His daughter has flown down 3 or 4 times now and his son is up every weekend, or if he has a client in the area he will stop in. So please everyone, just pray for a passing that is peaceful and for my Uncle and cousins to be at peace with this whole situation and just that they are able to let her go. Thank you again for you thought and concern. Dena in So CA Mother (83) will be 84 on the 21st of October. End stages of LBD. __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Hi Sandie Well we are still all here and hanging in there. Yesterday the doctors did what my Uncle says is the last procedure that he will consent to. They looked around in my Aunt's lungs and extracted over a liter of fluid. Hopefully she will be able to breathe a little easier for a while. I am sure it will all just come back again. I hope he really means it this time. I think he is just so scared to lose her. 57 years of marriage is a long time. Anyway, it seems like torture to me. I will keep you posted from time to time. Thank you all again for your prayers, they are greatly appreciated. Dena --- Sandie and Pearce wrote: > Hi Dena- > > Thank you so much for writing this update. Guest guest
Hi Dena- Thank you for writing. I have been wondering how your family is doing. Reading of the procedure to drain fluids from your Aunts lungs took me to when that happened to my mom, over 23 years ago. I hope and pray your Aunt is at peace and that your Uncle finds strength, peace and courage in his days to come. Love and Hugs to you and your family- Sandie P.S. I will continue to pray for your dear Aunt and Uncle. Without saying, you and your mom are always in my prayers as well. -- Off Topic > > Hi Everyone > > I've had a very busy weekend, but I wanted to get > back > to you all regarding my Aunt. > > A special " Thank You " to Dorene, Jan, Joen, Stevie, > Vallerie, Courage Cowie, Sandie Pearce, > , Sharon, Jacqui, and Donna R. Guest guest
Dear Dena, A litre of fluid! Very significant. I truly hope you found your aunt in more comfort after the procedure. How difficult to decide what procedures to allow and deny for our LOs. Thinking about you and hoping for a peaceful ending for you both. You still have your mom to connect with. Guest guest
Dear I know you know what I am going through. Thank you for your thoughts. I will be a little relieved as I am picking up my cousin at the airport tomorrow. So at least my Uncle will have someone with him all weekend. I am doing dinners for him again too. He didn't even have bread in the house. Not that he is poor, not at all, he just does not take the time to go grocery shopping. My Aunt is the same. As they drop the level of her breathing tube she has to breath harder and harder. I am not sure if they will be able to wean her off the machine or not. I guess as the days go by we will see. She has been on it 7 days now. Dena Mother (83) End stages of LBD --- stimtimminss wrote: > Dear Dena, > A litre of fluid! Very significant. Guest guest
Hi Dena- Thank you for checking in and for passing along the services times. You will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers as you finish out this week. Many heartfelt hugs- Sandie and Des Moines, IA -- Off Topic Hi Everyone I just wanted to say " Thank you " for all you kind words and thoughts and prayers during the passing of my Aunt Louise. Her service will be on Thursday and Burial on Friday. A little strange, but that is how it is going to be. I have not this involved with a service since my father died 15 years ago. There is so much to do!! I have been run ragged with all the preparations. But it is all well worth it. Please know that I deeply appreciate each and every one of your comments and support. You are all great. Dena Mother (84) End stages of LBD and very stable __________________________________________________
