Guest guest
Hi Dhyan, Welcome to the group. There is an enormous amount of information, experience, and support available here. Congratulations to you for deciding NOT to go the pharmaceutical route! I think there is much that can be done to treat depressive feelings without resorting to pharmaceuticals. I'm glad you found the diet/low blood sugar information helpful. Nutritional supplementation can also be very helpful. Please tell us more about your history. At what point in your life did the depression start? Did a particular event kick it off? What pattern do the depressive episodes take? What is your diet like? There are many other questions to be asked in order to really work on easing your depression, but we'll stick with those that fit the scope of this list. Good nutrition is definitely the foundation for healthy mood. It sounds like you're making a good start on it. Warmly, Kim <<I am very interested in diet approaches for depression, and anxiety. Have read Kim's article on low blood sugar / diet and it sounds identical to what I seem to go through. Totally agree with the whole 'food is fuel for the body theory'. Have always been sensitive to what I eat. I have a homeopath, I see, but I am wanting to do more for myself rather than than continually rely on her + she is very expensive, and busy! I feel I need more than just one remedy to help if I have a relapse and am wanting to fine tune my ideas and recovery tools, as such. Have had depression for about 20 years, and for the last 2 years have primarily been using homeopathics to treat bad episodes. I am not on withdrawal, have always hated the idea of medicating myself, yesterday they almost had me as I was at a vulnerable point. Get them when they are down, y'know. But I came home and considered my next step and I thought No Way am I taking that prescription. Now, I will have to tell the nurse I am not seeing th p-doc, next week, she's gonna love that. She told me my obsessional thinking is working against me, and if I take the pills it will help that . HA yeah right, oh they are so disillusioned. Diagnosed me yesterday with a moderate to severe case of depression. I think what I have been eating is causing me to feel this way - some of it anyway. Thanks in advance you are very kind to help people this way. Currently prescribed Pulsatilla 10M (by homeopath) to take for 3 days as needed Taking Zinc 50 mg Magnesium 100 mg B6 50 mg And have cut out carbohydrates in evenings. dhyan>>

Nutrition is a big key here but so is attitude and coping skills. What led up to the depression at age 14? You said: <<Have had depression for about 20 years, and for the last 2 years have primarily been using homeopathics to treat bad episodes.>> ** What triggers the " bad episodes " ? You said: <<I am not on withdrawal, have always hated the idea of medicating myself, yesterday they almost had me as I was at a vulnerable point. Get them when they are down, y'know. It doesn't matter how the nurse reacts. As long as you have to live in your body you need to be totally responsible for making choices about what you put into it. You said: <<I think what I have been eating is causing me to feel this way - some of it anyway.>> ** In the majority of cases it is nutrition combined with the way one has of viewing life. You said: <<Thanks in advance you are very kind to help people this way. Has your homeopath ever given you any LM doses of anything? You said: <<Taking Zinc 50 mg Magnesium 100 mg B6 50 mg>> ** It's a start. You'd see a big difference if you were taking a full spectrum, high quality formula. I'd be glad to tell you more about the one I've recommended to people for several years now. You said: <<And have cut out carbohydrates in evenings.>> ** So what does a day's food look like for you? I'm glad you found us, Dhyan. As far as anything leading up to the depression.... I feel it was a hormonal change in my body. I don't remember feeling 'depressed' prior to this. The episode when i was 14 - a classmate's brother had been shot (and died) on our road, and I remember being shocked by this, and whether or not this is related... I am not sure. But for my 14 birthday I felt suicidal and didn't want any birthday presents and had no interest in life. Change of my routine can trigger an episode, doing too much and not pacing myself, getting bad news, being ridiculed. I take 3 tablets for 3 days of the 10 M. (and then leave it & it usually puts me back in balance). - what is a LM dose? I am now also on, Serotonic; which has vit. B3 - 35 mg vit. B6 - 20 mg L Tryptophan 25mg L Phenylalanine 50 mg 5 HTP - 25 mg I take 3 of these a day. I am on a supplement with ; Spirulina Barley Grass, Wheat Grass, Chlorella, Alfalfa, vege + fruit extract. (I can tell you how much if needed). A day's food would be.... Cereal / or toast with jam, earl grey tea with honey and milk. Lunch - crackers with humus or ham, tomato or a salad. or cheese sandwich. afternoon, fruit,/ or biscuits/ or - toast.+ cup of tea./ or chocolate. dinner : pasta dish salad with tuna / or potatoes + chicken + veges/ or fried fish + rice + salad. cup of tea I have been having less carbohydrates (than this) and feeling better for it. This is what I usually eat. I feel I have a pretty boring diet ! Need some variety definitely. Thanks Dhyan
