Guest guest
Hey, I don't know how the "schmaltz" word applies to this thread, and I know fair amount yiddish.......... Matt in Western PA Back from eastern PA schmaltz so uh I got up and I am not sure what has come over me. I made cinnamon rolls from scratch Yeast and all, wooden spoon No electricity( well til they go in the oven) Cracked the egg on t he side of the bowl and everthing Melted the butter on the wood stove... It;s the thanksgiving thing I suppose ... and so I have to thank you guys. seriously . I would be nowhere without this group of folks ( see KAren and carla and Deonne and Cory and PAul how i did not say this group of docs ) Even though I cannot type and post even when it is not Thursday you guys are very good to meMedicine is very hard for me I suppose that is really why people say family practice should not exist becasue it really is hard . It seems to me that medicien cannot be well practiced in isolation Confidentiaity aside, given the environemnt in which we work these days especially, I am sure I would not be able to do the owrk I do w ithout the network and comaradarie of practiceimprovement1 I worry about all the docs who do practice in isolation and have in the past, and while I admire them I cannot help but think about the dperession rates and divorces and missed opportunites, I do not see that bearing the responsilities we do can be shouldered alone easily Wea re not alone inmed school nor in residency then suddenly we are dropped into this thing they call practice. Sometimes all I have to do is read that one of you has done the same thing as I ,lat e inthe evening , with the insruancecompanies ,with the fax machine, with the troubled patietn with the bad prognoiss, or diffiuclt case ,and that's all I need. so thanks PATIENTS,please remember email may not be entirely secure and that Email is part of the medical record and is placed into the chart ( be careful what you say!)Email is best used for appointment making and brief questionsEmail replies can be expected within 24 hours-Please CALL if the matter is more urgent . Guest guest
It sort of means dressed up or lots of add ons like at a wedding or a party, the actual event not a person's dress choices although I guess you could use it that way. But it also has an undertone of almost being too much or tacky.... "That wedding was so schmaltzy with all those silly center pieces the those decorations...." Guest guest
Page down on Wikopedia and you will find slang meanings used since the '20s and '30s meaning anything sickeningly sweet or "greasy", especially music or poetry as in "That Lombardo guy is popular, but he sure plays a lot of schmaltz." or "They spend a lot of time together listening to schmaltzy love songs." Lots of other slang meanings depending on where you are. Now for the $64,000 question. Why do some of us pay so much for after hour answering services. I currently pay about $150 per month which seems reasonable until I notice that everyone in my call group does the same - 12 months a year at a total cost to the nine of us of over $16,000 per year. Over 4 years, that's $64,000. The nine of us have solo practices, so there is a coordination issue, but isn't there a better way? Thanks for all suggestions. -----Original Message-----From: [mailto: ]On Behalf Of Dr LevinSent: Saturday, November 28, 2009 8:31 AMTo: Subject: Re: schmaltz yes, but this wasn't used in a food vein............. Guest guest
I dropped the answering service years ago as I couldn’t justify the cost at all. All they did was page me when people needed to reach me. They charged extra to take messages or give patients information and extra to relay the messages. Shockingly. So many years ago, we got the answering machine as first line. Patients wanted to know our hours, listen to the message. If they just wanted to leave a message for when the office opened, leave the message. Then, when I opened my own practice, I continued that but had problems with pagers not working and couldn’t figure out why I was paying for an extra middle man. So I gave up the service and just let the patients call me if they need me instead of having to call the service to call me. Much cheaper.
