Guest guest
Hi ; I'm sorry about including the whole page but i don't know how to cut and paste. (I've been over it a dozen times and keep forgetting). Anyway, i found this aabstract on how zinc lozenges stop the common odol symptoms such as nasal congestion. Well i have on occasion woken up having swallowed wrong in my sleep. Y'know this may all the whole shebang be due to a zinc deficiency. Lack and fear of sleep due to running sinuses = swallowing wrong + fear of sleep = not enough sleep and poor food intake = psychosis. Here's the whole stretch of abstracts; teh zinc one is about #10: SCIENCE/HEALTH ABSTRACTS Volume 15, Number 4, Copyright 1996, Phylis A. Austin DIET/MENARCHE Numerous studies have suggested that diet influences the age of menarche. A recent study shows that the intake of seeds and nuts delays menarche in females over 12 years of age. In Western countries menarche has been occurring at a younger and younger age each decade. Girls over 13 years-of-age who consumed large quantities of dried fruits tended to have delayed menarche. (Acta Obstetrica Gynecologica Scandinavia 75:455-461, 1995) CAPSAICIN/NECK/SHOULDER PAIN Many suffer with chronic neck and shoulder pain, which may be attributed to a wide variety of causes. Capsaicin cream applications may relieve this pain. The subjects in this study applied the cream four times a day over a five week period. (American Journal of Physical Rehabilitation 74:39-44, 1995) LIVER TOXICITY/KOMBUCHA MUSHROOM The so-called Kombucha " mushroom " is widely touted as a treatment or cure for a wide variety of diseases. The flat, round, gray fungus is fermented to prepare a " tea. " There have been several reported cases of liver toxicity in Kombucha users. During the fermentation process such substances as alcohol, glucuronic acid, chondroitin sulfate acid, hyaluronic acid, and lactic acid are produced. (ls of Emergency Medicine 26(5)660-661, November 1995) FEEDING THE BABY Infants vary greatly in their willingness to accept new foods, and many eager parents salt food in an attempt to make it more acceptable to the infant. A study from the Division of Human Development and Family Studies at the University of Illinois showed that adding salt to new foods did not make them more acceptable to infants. They also observed that infants who had been breast-fed were more willing to accept new foods than were infants who had been bottle fed. (Pediatrics 93(2)271-277, February 1994) This study provides encouragement for mothers to provide a low salt diet for their infants. CHILDHOOD OBESITY/INTELLIGENCE Severely overweight children score lower on I.Q. tests than do normal weight children. They also had higher psychological problem scores. (International Journal of Obesity 19:355- 357, 1995) EXERCISE/MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS Multiple sclerosis patients who exercise have improvement in both physical condition and mood. Multiple sclerosis patients placed on a 15-week program of arm and leg exercise for 40 minutes three times a week had greater extremity strength, improved blood profiles, and less depression and anger than non-exercisers. Dr. of the University of land comments that his experience has shown that exercising patients have a better long-term outcome. (ls of Neurology 39:432-441, April 1996) CERVICAL ADENOCARCINOMA RISK FACTORS The incidence of cervical adenocarcinoma in women under 35 years-of-age has more than doubled since the 1970s. Los Angeles researchers studied nearly 600 women in an attempt to understand the factors which contribute to this disease. They report that the number of sexual partners before the age of 20, weight gain, and long-term use of oral contraceptives increase the risk. Women of low educational attainment and lower economic status also appear to be at increased risk. (Cancer Causes and Control 7:391-401, 1996) CALORIC RESTRICTION/DIABETES MELLITUS Caloric restriction is known to improve diabetic control and increase insulin sensitivity. A study in laboratory animals showed that it may actually prevent the development of diabetes mellitus. Sixty-seven percent of diabetes-prone rats developed diabetes on an ad libitum (as desired) diet, but none of the rats given a diet which was only 70 percent of the ad libitum diet developed the disease. (Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice 27(2)97-106, 1995) HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE MEDICATIONS A wide variety of medications given to lower high blood pressure have adverse effects such as depression, sexual dysfunction or impotence, nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue, and low blood pressure. Diuretics are often given in association with other medications. Recent studies have shown that diuretics cause an 11-fold increase in diabetes mellitus. (British Medical Journal, March 26, 1994; What Doctors Don't Tell You 5(11)1, 3, March 1995) Proper diet and exercise will go far toward controlling high blood pressure without medication. GROWTH HORMONE REPLACEMENT Growth hormone is being promoted to increase longevity, stimulate muscle growth and strength, and improve mental ability. A six-month follow-up of healthy elderly men given growth hormone demonstrated an increase in lean tissue mass, but no resultant improvement in functional ability. Furthermore, 77 percent of the growth hormone group developed adverse effects including edema, joint pain, high blood pressure, angina, or heart attack. (ls of Internal Medicine 124:708-716, April 15, 1996) Ed Comment- A year's dose of growth hormone may cost $12,000. Going to bed three hours before midnight, even if you sleep only three hours after midnight will give you about twice as much growth hormone as six hours of sleep all taken after midnight. LOW FAT DIET/BREAST DISEASE Women who suffer from benign breast disease may have a significant reduction in symptoms with the use of a low fat diet according to a study from India. The researchers placed a group of women on a diet which provided less than 15 percent of fat-derived calories. After six months on the diet 12 of the 17 women in the reduced calorie group reported less pain, a reduction in the size of breast masses, and less breast discharge. (National Medical Journal of India 7(2)60-62, March-April 1994) ANIMAL FAT/NON-HODGKIN'S LYMPHOMA A diet high in red meat and animal fat increases the risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in elderly women. Iowa researchers observed that women who had high intakes of animal protein from red meat, and particularly hamburger, were more likely to suffer this disease. High fruit intake decreased the risk. (Journal of the American Medical Association 275:1315-1321, May 1, 1996 ZINC LOZENGES/COMMON COLDS Zinc gluconate lozenges (13.3 mg. zinc) taken every two hours during waking hours will shorten the duration of symptoms of the common cold, according to a report from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio. Cough subsided in two days in the zinc group, but 4.5 days in the non-zinc group. Headache and hoarseness resolved one day sooner with zinc lozenges. Nasal congestion, nasal drainage and sore throat also cleared days earlier with the zinc. Some in the zinc group reported nausea and/or a bad taste in the mouth. (ls of Internal Medicine 125:81-88, 1996) CANCER/CALCIUM CHANNEL BLOCKERS Calcium channel blocker medications increase the risk of developing cancer. Calcium channel blockers, used in the treatment of high blood pressure, may block the body's natural anti-cancer mechanisms. (American Journal of Hypertension 9:695-699, 1996) You should try to find alternative treatments for high blood pressure. WEIGHT GAIN/REDUCED RESPIRATORY FUNCTION Gaining one pound a year as a person ages may significantly reduce respiratory function. A weight gain of nine pounds may reduce respiratory capacity one-half of that which would be produced by cigarette smoking. Smoking, aging, overweight, and dust exposure are all known to cause a reduction in lung function, but until this study, the significance of weight gain was not apparent. (American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine 153:1907-13, 1996) EARLY MATURITY/ADULT OBESITY Among the many other problems caused by early maturity, children with early physical maturity are at increased risk of being overweight in adulthood. (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 64:18-24, 1996) PREECLAMPSIA OF PREGNANCY/CALCIUM/VITAMIN D-3 Calcium and vitamin D-3 supplements during pregnancy decrease the percentage of pregnant women who develop preeclampsia according to a report from Japan. Over 900 women were followed throughout pregnancy; 16.9% of those not treated developed preeclampsia, but only 10.9% of those given the supplements did. The supplements may be beneficial to women at high risk of preeclampsia. (International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology 47:115-120, 1994) CHARCOAL/POISONING Charcoal formulations for poisoning are produced by several U.S. companies. Ingredients vary, depending on the manufacturer. A study of the most effective formulation indicated that the products which do not contain sorbitol are the most effective. Sorbitol added to the charcoal increases adverse effects, particularly in children, and may reduce the effectiveness of the charcoal. (ls of Pharmacotherapy 27:358-361, March 1993) CAFFEINE/FETUS Theobromine, theophylline and paraxanthine accumulate in the fetal brain after the mother consumes caffeine. While the adult brain has the ability to exclude these substances the fetal brain does not. Earlier reports have demonstrated the accumulation on these toxic substances in the amniotic fluid.
