Guest guest
Hi Kendee, You said: <<Hello everyone! I hope everyone had a nice Christmas!! A good friend of mine is planning on trying Zyban to help stop smoking. I told her I didn't think it was a good idea, but didn't know of any specifics. I thought that I had heard of others having a reaction to it. Does anyone know of any specifics that might help me to discourage her? She is pretty open minded & does believe in the validity of my adverse reaction to Zoloft. I'd appreciate any help that anyone might have. Thanks!>> ***Zyban is the drug that started all of the probelms for 's husband Bob. You may want to ask about it, or even review some of her posts from the archives. An SSRI (or any pharmaceutical, for that matter) is a BAD, BAD choice for someone who wants to quit smoking. BTW, I was on wellbutrin (same as Zyban) for a couple of years for depression, during which time my smoking increased significantly. Doesn't seem like a great stop-smoking aid to me..... There are many ways to quit smoking without risking the permanent damage that comes to so many from the use of psychotropic drugs. When a person decreases their nicotine intake s/he suffers from a reduction in the amount of circulating dopamine. Zyban/Wellbutrin increases dopamine; so do protein-rich meals. Here are some of the foods that will safely elevate dopamine via the amino acid tyrosine: most fish, poultry, eggs, turkey, chicken, veal, red meat, beans, lentils, soybeans and green beans. Sex, excitement, fear, and challenge also raise dopamine. Here is a regimented plan for cutting down by 1 cigarette a week. Establish a baseline of approximately how much is smoked a day, subtract one cigarette. Then multiply the number of hours awake by 60. Take this answer and divide it by the number of cigarettes smoked a day. This will give the time in between cigarettes. For example, let's say Spot (Sally, Dick, and Jane's dog) establishes that he smokes 22 cigarettes a day, so we're going to subtract 1 and say that Spot will smoke 21 cigarettes a day this week. On average, he is awake for 17 hours a day. We multiply 17 hours by 60 minutes and get 1020 minutes. We then divide the number of cigarettes (21) into the number of minutes awake per day (1020). We see that Spot can smoke a cigarette every 48 min. if awake for 17 hours. This is a slow, disciplined way to cut back that is not very difficult and lacks the adverse effects of a brain-altering substance. Here are some of the adverse effects of Zyban: http://www.geocities.com/borg_aw/sides/indxside.htm By the way, it's good to 'see' you :-) Regards,

Thanks for the information! , I have printed out the side effects & will certainly pass those on. That should be enough to scare her! Thanks so much!!>> ** You're very welcome :-) Regards,
Guest guest
..Thanks for telling this about your husband. That is really scary that he was never sick and then all of those problems after starting down a path with wellbutrin. I would have done the same thing you did (stood in the MD office and yelled until they listened). I am wishing you and your husband a MUCH better 2004 and a few miracles to go with it. I am hoping SOMEONE in the medical field finally does listen to you about what you have been through. Terry > > Hi guys!
