so what I have learned  so f ar is-in case it is usefulto anyone else-1 software can become " corrupted "   LIke you can get a  bad fax or  s oemthing I guess and it messes up the program  I  couldnot get that at first ... Norotn or symantec programs  can be hard to remove they get fragmented al l  over the computer and you  de -install but some  piece of data hangs out somehwere and  will nto go away. Hence I would do taskmanager and end task andit would come right back I was feeling haunted. IN that case you may have to take all the  stuff off yourmachine and reinstall programs one by one This cleaning out the garage process  is  called cleaning the registry and is apparnwlty many hrs long scary and  not to be attmpeted on one's own.(I had only vaguley heard of this  scary thing)   I called my IT guy but he isnot  avaible  this wek Out  cutting wood:) Probably gonna get a moose too while he's at it...

3 e faxing is easy and cheap and great for imps but   to do it form your emr is not possible  on a pc anyway unless you do an etra  step and save the presription. I had to get a pdf thingy  to do this. I  called my emr support for an hr today preparing for the great clean out   to make sure I was doing backups right .EMR support told me all kinds of wonderful things.   Iback up two  ways and I am doing fine but I never practice restore   so I wanted my hand held; and he told me all sorrts of odds and ends of stuff.We did  free logme in or show me your pc or something

 the EMRsupport guytold me th e part about to save a prescription  you must print to a pdf writer then attching the pdf to email lets me " fax " my email or email my fax Whatever. I have not yet figured out how to receive the faxes without a new program yet ;I can receive  by either email or pc if I am  here  IT isnot clear  that i get all my faxes to me by email when I take the lap top home  even when it is turned off.MAybe I do.

I have made  great progress I have been able to work  this whole time  When all else fails print onto paper then fax /hand to patietn/mail in an envelope.( of course I didnot have any stamps either  and I lost my wallet  which had  A stamps and B my credit card to buy more)  It has sort a been a   rough few days:)

 PAtietn care has not suffered Grey hair has increasedI had a separate problem going on I wa s  unclear about  --the faxmahine printing to  paper  would print the same page over and over and over Ask me how insane i have been. Cover sheets endlessly .This is becasue the carriage gets blocked up  constnalty inthe cheapo lexmark allin one  ;everytime I clear the carriage it prints the same page I guess it thinks it  did not print before.

It may have been  getting blocked becasue I was , to save trees  truning over and using the  back side of letters  old papers  which had been folded etc and clogged the thing up I guess?I now have my wallet. I have stamps

  I am using alot of paper andink. but  tomrorow  I will intergrate allof this and see if I have a whole new system.MY emr   guyalso said  heh  heh about efaxing  that if I called so and so his boss I could bargain the  e  fax price down based on volume  and get e  prescribing from my emr. I have been reluctant to cough up funds for that but pharmacires  seem so overloaded they are making alot of mistakes .I liked  it that in win fax pro  I could say this fax went through at  exactly what time and it  said said X, you got  that script for  hctz  but they  a re making mistakes  e prescribing could prevetn errors.

There is a ton of free IT information available just by Googling,

which is basically how I learned how to use Linux. Hylafax, which Graham mentioned also runs on Linux and I believe originally was developed for use on commercial Unix computers before Linux even existed. There are several other open source faxing programs that are very robust and have been around for years and years. I'm using two others in my tkFP. One is called " mgetty+sendfax " and there is another called " efax " (not related to another efax mentioned on the list) that runs only

on Linux. Mgetty and " efax " are like the " engine " that runs at a low

level and does the dirty work of sending and recieving the faxes. A programmer aiming to use them in a more customized situation, like and EMR, would then use higher level tools to set up ways to handle, sort,

display, annotate and other things you want to do with the faxes. This can be done in many ways, such as even using " Open Office " . Graham is using

a computer language called " Rebol " . I like to use another one called Tcl/Tk, there are others such as " PYTHON " or " PERL " , or the " BASH Shell " , which could also be used.

As Graham stated, you should use a serial modem as most of these programs were originally designed for that type and Linux works best

with a serial modem. I have one external one and another older one

that plugs into the mother board, but is non-the-less a serial modem.

USB modems are still problematic on Linux, or at least I don't know much about them. If you want to fax on Linux, make sure the computer you buy has a serial port. A lot of new computers no longer come with a serial port, especially laptops. The other type of modem that is problematic is the " Winmodem " , a real cheapo fax modem that only runs on Windows. Stay away from those.

If your EMR is integrated with the fax service you do not have to print to pdf first.So, I can fax letters, prescriptions etc directly from my EMR anywhere I have internet access. No intermediate PDF printing or fax driver required.

And they want us to pay for this all to service our corporate masters better... I say someone should make e faxing a free thing for the providers since as you so correctly point out who really stands to benefit the most from it.... It certainly isn't us, that's for sure... We just get to pay our monthly access fee to our e fax provider... Niccccceee.....

Don't invest too much time, or especially any of your money, in faxing. One of the prime targets of those who want us all to have EMRs thatcan "talk" to each other is to get rid of faxing. They alreadypassed a Federal Bill to OUTLAW faxing a prescription between your officeand a pharmacy. This was of course, a typical deal where thosewho stand to benefit financially from their monopoly on the Internet based prescription format that would replace faxing, an alliance between Allscrtipts, yourfriendly Health Insurance Companies, and various Giant pharmacycorporations like CVS, Walgreens et. all, spent a bunch money winingand dining your federal legislators so the ban would be included inrecent legislation. The ban was already to have taken effect last January, I think it was, but a large outcry from users of legacy fax based medical records systems, who hadbeen guilty of not watching what was going on in

Congress, caused the ban onfaxing to be postponed (but not repealed), for a couple of years. But if they take no further action, you won't be able to fax a prescription in about 2 years or so, I forget the date where theban on faxing prescriptions will go back in effect. Perhaps it will belike the Sustained growth rules for Medicare, and they'll continue topass an emergency exception at the last minute each year just before the new fiscal year starts to allow faxing for one more year. well but there  will always be faxing  from  consultants and others etc ? so if I can do it even  more  paperelssly than  so far and  by email ,for ease, when I am away etc I do a better job running th e practice.AS to languages and open source etc I looked at a littel of that this week but that takes some familiarity with   some comfort level with the IT  stuff Or trust   I see open source and Ithink uhoh what amI gettinginto?

Don't invest too much time, or especially any of your money, in faxing.

One of the prime targets of those who want us all to have EMRs that

can " talk " to each other is to get rid of faxing. They already

passed a Federal Bill to OUTLAW faxing a prescription between your office

and a pharmacy. This was of course, a typical deal where those

who stand to benefit financially from their monopoly on the Internet based prescription format

that would replace faxing, an alliance between Allscrtipts, your

friendly Health Insurance Companies, and various Giant pharmacy

corporations like CVS, Walgreens et. all, spent a bunch money wining

and dining your federal legislators so the ban would be included in

recent legislation. The ban was already to have taken effect last January, I think it was, but a large outcry from users of legacy fax based medical records systems, who had

been guilty of not watching what was going on in Congress, caused the ban on

faxing to be postponed (but not repealed), for a couple of years. But if they take no further action, you won't be able to fax a prescription in about 2 years or so, I forget the date where the

ban on faxing prescriptions will go back in effect. Perhaps it will be

like the Sustained growth rules for Medicare, and they'll continue to

pass an emergency exception at the last minute each year just before the new fiscal year starts to allow faxing for one more year. Nobody can say yet.

Using allscripts, it's a portal and I don't pay, but each pt needs to be entered OR the pharmacy can enter it.

Helps that the hospital bought a license for the community or it'd cost me $60/month

OH. Hmm.Well that's good  I do nto undesrtand  how faxes work anyway Put that paper in , the words line up and tell lthe elctrons to hold hands and  run through a wire and join up onthe other side  to lay  down as words on another paper OR  even a screen!

I believe there will be pressure to eliminate faxing of consults and that

type information also. The banning of prescription faxing is

just a first step. Prescriptions are easier to program into

a computer based message format structure, such as XML, since the message content of prescriptions can

fit into a consistently defined structure, with data fields like the demographic

and medication information that can easily fit into a computer database . A medical consultation is more difficult

to format in a structured way like that, but still, a fax, being an

image file, is not a good way for computers to exchange information and

be able to later use the computer to extract useful information out of the stored data that could be used on populations of patients to glean

useful information of interest to the Government or large friendly

insurance and pharmaceutical giants, who are the main ones who want to get this

information. We don't need information on large aggregates of patient populations that much in our day to day practices, but they need it to see what is going on out there, so they can monitor us and our patients and develop new policies and procedures

for us to follow and obey. All in our best interest, of course.

no that's ok you can blab on:) I get some of it I have heard that OCR story beforeOnce I talked to a a radiologist who explained TV to me  YOu do well at explainng stu ff to regluar people  becasue  you like this stuff

Faxes are a type of scan, like a picture of a tree or a cloud that you scan in. Just a bunch of pixels of varying shades and hues to the computer, but the characters don't really mean anything to it as an image like that. A computer is very poor at extracting the meaning from a scanned image of written text. You can try with software like OCR or " Optical Character Recognition " . But its not very accurate - similar to speech recognition. We as humans can do that easily, but computers are lousy at it - so far, anyway.

The point of not using faxes is so they can force us to use formats

where the computer codes each letter or symbol. With type of data,

is very easy for a computer to read and extract the information into

a database of some sort. Of course it is also easier for hackers to

get it and use it as well, or write programs that spoof the computer

into believing a human is interacting with it, but it's actually

a malicious program. That's why when you log into some web sites,

they have you read a weird looking picture which is a pixel based image similar to a scan, with letters of varying sizes and fonts that are also twisted or rotated. Only humans are good at reading that type of

image, even OCR can't do it, so they are more certain it is really you, or at least a human on the other end. Don't know if that makes any sense, sorry if I'm just blabbing on....

Hey Jean. Mashing potatoes is part of my fitness plan. Originally, aboutthe time PCs started becoming popular, eachcharacter of our QWERTY keyboards had a unique code made up of 8 bits because the processors could only process 8 bits at a time. The codewas called "ASCII". But with 8 bits, there were not enough uniguecodes to do other languages world wide. So eventually when the computers got more powerful, most people now have 32 bit and someare starting to get 64 bit computers at home or office, they couldstart coding all the symbols uses in all the languages of the world.So now we have what is called "Unicode", I think that comes in a few different flavors, but there is a unique 32 bit code for every symbol in most any written language.
