Guest guest
Jen, I'm probably going to get blasted for saying this, but oh well. I think you should go w/the DOCband. I say this b/c your are guaranteed to have an orthotist that is EXPERIENCED in treating plagiocephaly. You don't have any time to waste. Time is NOT on your side. The window to correct plagio isn't a big one. You need an ortho that knows what they are doing and HAS treated older babies. You can get the with a DOCband ortho. If I offended anyone, I'm sorry. This is just my opinion, I'm not saying the STARband is a bad product because it's not. Guest guest
Hi, I wanted to let you know our ortho mentioned we may have to consider another STARband for Olivia and her case of plagio was moderate...started the band at 8 months. I'm not sure I believe that your ortho said he would only have 1 band, of course starting later, maybe the growth rate has slowed, maybe it depends on the degree of asymmetry, too? I told our ortho that we are not getting another band. Our insurance wouldn't cover it and I think she will get enough correction with her current band. I'm also concerned that your ortho has not worked with any other older children. I think it's great, though, if you can talk to another parent whose child was treated there. BTW, we only go for adjustments every 4 weeks, I think it's because they use the STARscanner. Have you considered Houston for the STARband? I guess Aetna probably wouldn't cover it in that case. I don't understand why Aetna wouldn't cover the DOCband? Have you tried appealing? I know it must be a hard decision, is there anyone else here with STARband experience in DFW? Guest guest
Hi Jen, Well, you have certainly done your homework! The ortho sounds like a very good person. It's good that you asked a million questions - how else could you gather information and make a decision - right?! :-) No one here can tell you what to do - you are the one in the middle of all of this and you are the only one in this group who has visited with the ortho and gotten a first hand impression. I would suggest that you call some of the patients the ortho offered contact information for - talking to other moms that have had babies treated by this ortho might really help you come to a decision. Not meaning to get too personal here, but is paying for the treatment out of pocket an option for you? It wasn't an option for us when my daughter received her helmet. Our choices were to use the locally made helmet or not get treatment for our daughter. We did not have the time, money or resources to travel or pay out of pocket for the DOCband. We weighed all our options and chose to get the helmet. We kept a close eye on things and everything turned out GREAT for us! If the $$ is not a huge obstacle then you may want to scrap the STARband altogether and get the DOCband and hope that you might win an appeal (long shot probably). It's easy to say just get the DOCband and not consider anything else, but everyone's situation is different. It simply is not an option for some and I can certainly understand that! You'll get no judgement from me whichever way you decide to go. I understand your dilemma, but YOU must do what you feel is best for your son and your situation. You'll have my support whatever you decide to do. Keep us posted and hang in there! I know this must be very tough for you. Guest guest
Jen, this is a tough call for you! I can't make a decision for and neither can anyone else. You have to do what you feel is best for Trentyn. I will tell you that 100% correction is just crazy, in a doctors stand-point. 's head looks 100% better to me than when we began, but she didn't get 100% correction. The amount of correction that a child receives during this correction is very subjective. I can't imagine parents not wanting their child to be photographed for before and after to show other patients.......Just be on your toes with her if that is the route you decide to go. Just remember, time is not on your side! Guest guest
Hi Jen, Sheesh, I know how this is! We had 3 to choose from: the DOC, the STAR, and a Hanger band. We ultimately chose to travel out of state (and out of insurance coverage) to get the DOCband. While we have time on our side, I didn't want to risk it b/c of Hannah's severity. I also wanted her to be in it for the shortest time possible. I realize you don't have the time on your side, so that is a definite consideration for you. The ortho you saw SOUNDS good, but I would be so iffy without seeing the proof. With us, NOPCO was where she would have gotten a STARband from. THey used to make their own helmet and had just started using STARbands that month. I didn't want my daughters head to be one of their guinea pigs! If it was her foot, maybe I'd risk it? It would have been cheaper (if not completely covered) and it would have been less than an hour drive instead of 3 hrs each way. Though I couldn't really afford to DOCband, I just had to do what I felt was best for her. That's what they make credit cards for, LOL! If all our insurance appeals get denied they we'll do some fundraising or something. If you really felt comfortable with her and believed what she's telling you (I think the 100% for all her grads sounds a little sketchy) then finish your homework by talking to some of her patients and doing an eval at CT. I'm sure when you do that you'll really have the feeling as to which one is right for you. Plus, if Dustie won her appeal, I bet you have a good shot at it too. Guest guest
Hi ! Thank you for your honesty. I know answering the which band question is a sticky one. It has been a hard decision, but in the end his age has to be the strongest factor. If we had been banded at 4 months when I first took him in, I would try this Ortho without hesitation. Unfortunately though, he will be 13 months before he is banded and I just don't have the time to go with someone that I think might be okay. In a few years, she may be well known for her wonderful care of plagio patients, but the level of experience is just not there yet. At CT, I know what I am getting. Plus, insurance spoke with that Ortho today and sounded like getting approved would be a process even with her. So, on that note we will just suck it up and hope to get something on the back end through appeals. Thank you to everyone that replied, your support and help has meant so much to me!
