Guest guest
Vickie, Cab-O-Sil is used as a free-flow agent in the bath salts to keep them from caking. Yes it can help prolong the fragrance because of the extreme surface area inherent in the material but that is not its primary function. Young KY Labs Innovators of Fine Personal Care Products www.kylabs.com cab-o-sil Good evening, Does cab-o-sil help retain fragrances in bath salts? and if so then the need for dentritic salt is not necessary? What % of my bath salts formula should the cab-o-sil be to prevent caking? I bought some cab-o-sil and did not have any luck with using it to thicken or gel water. I think that's what it was supposed to do. It's been a while and I forgot. Thanks, Bobbi ~
Guest guest
Bobbi, Cab-O-Sil will gel oils not water. In a bath salt its purpose is to be a free-flow aid. In this function it is used at 0.50-1.0% W/W. Guest guest
>What is the primary purpose of cab-o-sil? Quoting from Cab-O-Sil Functions.pdf " The most important and widespread use of CAB-O-SIL untreated fumed silica in liquid systems is for the control and increase of viscosity and thixotropy. A thixotropic system is one which exhibits a time-dependent decreasing viscosity or shear stress at a constant shear rate. When the shearing force is eliminated, the viscosity returns over a period of time to its original " at-rest " value. Among compounds which are capable of promoting thixotropy, CAB-O-SIL is frequently the agent of choice because of its extremely high efficiency. " Cab-O-Sil Functions.pdf is located in the Ingredients folder in the CosmeticInfo files area http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Cosmeticinfo/files/Ingredients/ >What % of my bath salts formula should the cab-o-sil be to prevent caking? It usually doesn't take much. I'd start with 1% or less. >I bought some cab-o-sil and did not have any luck with using it to thicken >or gel water. Cab-o-Sil is used to thicken solvents, vegetable oils, mineral oil. More information can be found in Cab-O-Sil Functions.pdf.
