But other people have told me the same thing, so, I guess SC is doing pretty good, eh? Our copy is the old edition and in reference only, so it can't be checked out...thus the xeroxing. The chapter on emulsification is so good and I wish we could put it in the files section of cosmeticinfo so all could see it. I've ordered the 8th edition which was published in 2000. I am looking forward to getting the book and really appreciate Dave telling me about this distributor. This sales rep actually took the initiative to tell me about other books that I may be interested in. Harry's IS expensive, but my rationale is that some women spend that much easily on one outfit or a piece of jewelry--all according to what we value as important. I've done that too, but not anymore.....give me some chemicals and Harry and I'll be quite content ;-) This one will be a good addition to my library, can't wait! If you're looking for medicine, law, art, biology, music, archaeology -- any of the standard subjects -- then there's a huge choice around here. But when it comes to cosmetic formulation, well, I guess all the universities consider it a trivial topic. I haven't found any local library that collects books in this field. A couple business libraries have some management-oriented trade journals, like HAPPI, but not technical titles like Cosmetics and Toiletries. > Our copy is the old edition and in > reference only, so it can't be checked out...thus the xeroxing. I bought a copy of the 1968 edition for very little money from a used book dealer. The chapters on emulsions, moisturizers, lotions, etc. are fine (once I translate the old chemical names into their new INCI equivalents). But much of the other information is quite outdated. So as I'm reading it, I'm never quite sure if the information is good or no longer recommended. (The chapter on hormone creams, for instance, made my jaw drop nearly to the floor! Estrogen as a moisturizer...!?!?) > Harry's IS > expensive, but my rationale is that some women spend that much easily > on one > outfit or a piece of jewelry--all according to what we value as > important. Absolutely. It's not an extravagance if it's for professional or personal growth. How much would you spend to attend a conference on cosmetic formulation? Probably a lot more, between travel, lodging, and tuition. This new edition of Harry's is definitely a good investment by my reckoning. Now, have you seen the info on the other books in the series? Volume 3, on individual cosmetic ingredients, looks wonderful! It's only several hundred dollars more.
