Guest guest
Hello, I'm mostly a lerker, but I've been pondering this question for quite some time... Could there be harmful bacteria in goat milk soap? Is there a way to test for it? I love the stuff, but I have a son with a suppressed immune system and I'd like to find out for sure that it is safe for someone like him to use. Would a lab be able to test for this? Guest guest
Hi Lorna It is not impossible that a goat's milk soap, or any (handmade) soap may contain some harmful bacteria, introduced either during manufacture or during use. What is utterly unlikely is that any such bacteria will grow in the soap, meaning that the numbers present will be very low. I cannot state absolutely that there would be less than say, the harmful bacteria on a computor keyboard or clothing or whatever, but this is the sort of level we would be talking about. As regards the goat's milk element itself, if it comes from goats producing milk intended for human consumption and undergoing routine testing for disease, and has been pasteurised, then I don't see any increased risk. Commercial milks are regularly tested for bacteria themselves; if you know the milk source for the soap you can ask them for a copy of the bacteriological assays. I am not a doctor, so this is only my opinion, but if your son can touch most things including shop-bought goat's milk without a medical risk, then soap should be safe for him. You might like to check this with his doctor.
