Guest guest
Debbie, Monoethanolamine, MEA, is a primary substituted amine that has one ethanol group replacing a hydrogen in an ammonia molecule. The chemical formula is CH3CH2O-NH2. As a primary amine it can be more reactive than TEA, Triethanolamine in forming emulsions. Because it has two Hydrogens attached to the central Nitrogen in the molecule it can make some emulsions more water resistant. This is good for sunscreens and mascaras. Because it is more reactive you can often use less stoichiometrically to neutralize fatty acids in your formula. If I have confused you let me know and I will try to give greater detail. Guest guest
I had seen it included in a degreaser @2%, along with surfactants, and wondered what it's purpose was. Guest guest
Debbie, MEA will react with the fatty acids to saponify them for removal. As I stated earlier it is an amine, which you can think of as a substituted ammonia.
