I am trying to be as accurate as possible since I am having a >terrible time keeping things in emulsion for more than a day or so. The HLB System is a tool; it is not the answer. I think it's fair to say that the required HLB your essential oil blend will range from 9 to 12. >* Question 2: I am using Olive Oil Peg 7 Esters at a % of the TOTAL >FORMULA WEIGHT. However, I am using American Lecithin's Alcolec LV- >30 as a co-emulsifier and in their literature they recommend using >it at 5%-10% of the WEIGHT OF THE OIL. Has anyone had much >experience with Lecithin as an emulsifier in a sprayable product? >Note: My total EO content is now down to about 3% but I am using >Soybean oil at 3% (HLB=7) for a total oil phase of 6%. I wish to >make a sprayable formula. Any advice? If your oil phase contains: Soybean (Glycine Soja) Oil = 3% Essential Oil Blend = 3% and the required HLB of Soybean (Glycine Soja) Oil is 7 the required HLB of Essential Oil Blend is 9 then the required HLB of your oil phase = 8 if your oil phase contains: Soybean (Glycine Soja) Oil = 3% Essential Oil Blend = 3% and the required HLB of Soybean (Glycine Soja) Oil is 7 the required HLB of Essential Oil Blend is 12 then the required HLB of your oil phase = 9.5 But from calculations, we also know that 20% Lecithin + 80% PEG-7 Olivate = HLB 9.6 25% Lecithin + 75% PEG-7 Olivate = HLB 9.3 30% Lecithin + 70% PEG-7 Olivate = HLB 8.9 35% Lecithin + 65% PEG-7 Olivate = HLB 8.6 40% Lecithin + 60% PEG-7 Olivate = HLB 8.2 45% Lecithin + 55% PEG-7 Olivate = HLB 7.9 Maurice PS: Why did you choose Alcolec LV-30? Just curious. I think Alcolec BS would have been a better choice. -------------------------------------------------------- Maurice O. Guest guest
PS: Why did you choose Alcolec LV-30? Just curious. I think Alcolec BS would have been a better choice. Maurice Hi Maurice, I looked up Alcolec BS on the American Lecithin chart and found it has the same HLB as Alcolec LV-30 (4.0) . Therefore, I don't think I answered your question stated above. I picked the LV-30 over the Alcolec BS because the chart describes it as having superior properties for sprays over the Alcolec BS. Description of Alcolec BS: Oil Soluble Description of LV-30: Easily sprayable, low viscosity, oil soluble Thanks, Chris
