Guest guest
Hi Kat & welcome to our group!! It's not uncommon for improvement to be sporatic. Although I'd be concerned too if she has shown no improvement in the last 5 wks, that does sound a bit long to go w/no change. Of course she is getting "older" now and growth is slowing, but I'd still think she's grown. Has your daughter grown over the past couple mos? Does she get scanned at each appt to monitor progress or no? Is your orthotist experienced w/the STARband and plagio? Finding a trained/experienced orthotist is the key to success with these products. I am a bit concerned about him adding pad now to the band. It sounds kind of similar to what my daughter's STAR orthotist did to her STARband after we went 3 long mos with absolutely zero improvement to her plagio (he was clueless about the product and plagio!). Abby's orthotist added some sort of pad to the non flat side of her head to over-compensate for no change, that then caused her forehead to bleed from being too tight. So please be sure to bring her back to the ortho for the red spot you're describing, it sounds like he has overcompensated & added too much pad to the inside of her band. Average treatment time for plagio babies is roughly 4.5 mos time, but that's simply an average. It's sooo hard to say how long a baby will be banded because they are all individuals. It depends on growth, severity & age for the most part. Many many members have gotten 2nd bands for their babies as well, so that's not too uncommon to get a 2nd band, some have even gotten a 3rd. Olivia is wearing her band 23 hrs a day, every day right? Welcome again, I'm sorry you're so frustrated, been there!! Hang in there, we're glad you found us (better late than never!). She is 10.5 months old, started wearing helmet at 8 months old after waiting for referrals and appointments during 3-4 months. Her asymetry is moderate (it was 11.4 mm), she also had some tort which corrected after I worked with her from 2-4 months old myself so no exercises needed. We saw immediate improvement within the first 2 weeks and showed about 3 mm improvement after the first 4 weeks. However when we returned after 5 more weeks (9 wks total), there was no improvement. I was extremely disappointed because we are very diligent about Olivia wearing her helmet (we want her to wear at as least amount of time as possible). The ortho said she would have to wear it another 4-8 weeks and even mentioned the possibility of another helmet. Well I told him this was it, we are not getting another helmet, we just can't afford it and I want my daughter to enjoy things..going swimming, going to the park, etc (we live in the south where it's very hot and humid). The ortho did make an adjustment to make it tighter, in fact I had to take her in as it was causing a pink spot (will probably have to take her in again tomorrow).Sorry to vent, has anyone had improvement and then no improvement? When I asked the ortho, he just commented it was common to have alot of improvement in the 1st 4 weeks. Thanks so much if you read this far! Guest guest
Hi Kat, My son is in a DOCband now for 8.5 weeks and we have stopped seeing improvement because his growth has slowed so much. He is almost 14 months. I am considering a second band which I hate because I live in the South too (Atlanta) with very humid summers. Hopefully Olivia will have a growth spurt and you'll see more correction soon. Good luck, Natashakurimak2001 <kurimak2001@...> wrote: Hi,My dd, Olivia has been wearing the Starband for 9.5 weeks, at a place that uses a laserscan (instead of casting). Guest guest
My daughter Jenna started wearing hear STARband at 9 months. Unfortunately we did not have the scanner available. She had very noticable improvement in the first 3 weeks. After the first 3 weeks, the changes were small. She did have some improvement at each visit. She hit no big spurts while banded. Her biggest spurt was after casting and before fitting. The last week of being banded she finally hit a spurt. Not a huge one but a spurt anyway. She received 80% correction in 12 weeks. That is without any major growth spurts. I think since she was older the changes just came a little at a time. But when I added up all the little improvements in the 12 weeks, she received wonderful correction. She has also rounded since graduation. I estimate her around 85% now. I would definitely ask about the pink spot. Let us know what you find out. You are a great mom doing a wonderful job!
