Hi Everyone,

I'm Angie- new to this group. I'm loving it so far, too!

I have this quote regarding non-ionic surfectants, from the on-line course

discussed in this thread. Here goes:

Uses of <A

HREF= " http://www.kcpc.usyd.edu.au/discovery/glossary-all.html#207 " >Nonionic</A>

<A

HREF= " http://www.kcpc.usyd.edu.au/discovery/glossary-all.html#87 " >Surfactants</A\

>

" The predominant use of these surfacants is in foods and drinks,

pharmaceuticals and skin-care products. It is thought that these <A

>

are mild on the skin even at high loadings and long-term exposure (although

they can lead to a weakening of the skin barrier by helping the transport of

molecules "

How can they lead to " a weakening of the skin barrier by helping the

transport of molecules " ? What kinds of molecules? Is the surfectant going

to cause a breakdown in plasma membrane?

Thanks to all,

Angie P.
