Guest guest
Group, Below is the email I sent to off list this morning from my office. It contained information that needed but seeing the posts tonight on the list about this topic I felt that it was important to provide this data to the group at large. please note I did not include that vanillin becomes 16% soluble in 80°C water. You also failed to note in a follow-up post on this topic that the Merck Index states that vanillin is soluble in ‘oils’. Rose pointed out that her soaps containing vanillin turn brown. This is the oxidation that I noted below in my email to Chris. You have learned an important lesson the hard way and are indeed lucky that you have not caused yourself any serious injury. Vanillin is soluble in water at 1%, 5% in glycerin and freely soluble in ethanol, chloroform, ether, carbon disulfide, glacial acetic acid, pyridine, oils and aqueous solutions of alkali hydroxides. It oxidizes in moist air and is affected by light. It should be stored in light resistant containers. One part of vanillin is equal to 400 parts vanilla pods. 2.5-3 parts vanillin will replace 500 parts tincture vanilla in the manufacture of liqueurs. It is also a reagent used in analytical chemistry. These references are from the Merck Index, 12th ed. You need to read the MSDS for it carefully. Whenever you work with any kind of chemical always maintain good hygiene. Always wash your hands after handling any chemical compound before touching any mucosal membranes. This includes your eyes, nose, lips and personal areas. It also includes any open wounds. One of the primary functions of the skin is to protect your internal organs from the external environment. When you have an open wound this is a pathway into the body and needs protection.
