Hi Jayne,

first let me say that the bands DO NOT restrict brain growth! I promise that there is absoulutely no research to support that statement. My advice would be to try and get into a pediatric neurologist who can help you.

Hello my name is Jayne. I have a 5 1/2 month old son who has plagiocephaly from where he layed on his left side of his head for the first two months of his life. His head now is flat on one side. I have been trying repositioning since he was 2 1/2 months and it is not working. I am worried about this because my pediatrician basically blew me off when I mentioned it to her. She told me that no one's head is perfect and that the helmets and Bands that everyone on this board has been talking about restricts brain growth and it is not recommended. So now I am at a loss. I have changed pediatritions to get a second opinion. I am scared that the new pediatrition will say the same thing. Has anyone here ever heard of any negative effects of the helmets or Bands? And, can anyone recommend what I should do if my new pediatrition does not recommend a helmet also. I would also like to add that I live in West Virginia if anyone could recommend a good doctor. Thank you all in advance for any help.

Hi Jayne: If you are not happy with what your pediatrician has told you, it is good that you are seeking a second opinion. If that one also tells you that it is no big deal, you may want to seek the advoce of a specialist (such as a neurosurgeon). My ped said Kurt's plagio was mild and would round out on its own, but sent us to the specialist anyway. He said it was classic plagio (moderate) and we either needed to get hIm off that side completely (especially at night) or get the helmet. We had been trying for 6 weeks (unsuccessfully) to keep him from sleeping on the flat spot, so we just opted for the helmet. We are very happy with our choice, as we didn't want to look back and regret that we didn't do everything possible. Would it have rounded out on its own? Maybe... but maybe not. I would rather be sure. Have you lookd at other babies' pictures in the photos section? You may want to do that to see how your baby's head compares. Kurt is in there. That's what really helped me decide to get a band. If you post your baby's pictures (top view), everyone can take a look and tell you what they think. Good luck... it is a hard decision but you are doing the right thing by researching all of your options. I believe the cranial technologies does free evaluations... I think their website is cranialtechnologies.com so you can see if they have a center near you. Good luck!

Hi Jayne,

Welcome to the group! My story is very similar to yours, thankfully I did not have to switch peds. My ped also dismissed all of my concerns, even tho my son had moderate plagio. I requested that rx for the DOC band, and she gave in. I hope that if your persistent, and you back up your case with lots of documentation that you can leave with your new ped, you won't have any problems getting treatment for your kiddo. Good luck- here's a link to some great info.
