Soyethyl Morpholinium Ethosulfate is the quaternary ammonium salt that is sold by Uniqema under the trade name Forestall. Quoting from http://www.uniqema.com/pc/lit/americas/pc16/index.htm Forestall is one of a unique class of cationic surfactants which are effective deodorizers for a wide range of malodors. It functions by complexing or neutralizing specific organic molecules and reducing their concentration on the vapor phase. Forestall is particularly effective against organic acids like those responsible for body odor. It also complexes sulfur compounds produced by various hair care products like home permanents, or depilatories. These and other potential applications are suggested below: Functions Hair care (permanents, straighteners, conditioners, dyes) Underarm deodorants (sticks, lotions, powders, antiperspirant formulas) Foot products (powders, insoles) Space deodorizers (aerosols, solids) Surface deodorizers (garbage containers, kitchen surfaces) Laundry products (rinses, conditioners) Hair care applications Forestall offers a dual functionality unlike any other hair care ingredient. First, it is a unique deodorizer. Forestall actually neutralizes various malodors by forming a complex with them. Forestall is also a highly effective cationic hair conditioner which reduces static fly-away and leaves hair soft, shiny and manageable. It improves wet combability and does not build up with frequent use. Forestall is water soluble and compatible with anionics generally used in shampoos. Functionality Deodorizations Independent laboratory tests have shown that Forestall neutralizes a wide range of malodors like amyl mercaptan, butyric acid, cabbage juice or tobacco smoke. The Uniqema Personal Care Laboratory has demonstrated that Forestall reduces the unpleasant odors associated with home permanents and depilatories. For example, 2% Forestall in waving lotion and/or neutralizer lotion neutralized the mercaptan odor of permed hair. Forestall is also effective as a post-treatment rinse to deodorize and condition the hair. Conditioning Our laboratory tests have shown that Forestall is a highly effective conditioner for hair. It is comparable to other commercial quaterniums with respect to wet or dry combability and reduced static charge. Moreover, it does not build up when used repeatedly. Degree of substantivity has been determined quantitatively on wool using a " Rubine Dye Test " described in U.S. Patent 3,769,398. When wool (or blond-hair) is treated with a cationic conditioner, anionic dye (Pyrazol Fast Bordeaux 2BL) is adsorbed by the cationic. The intensity of the resulting color is a function of the degree of substantivity and was measured colorimetrically. These experiments demonstrated that Forestall is more substantive than stearalkonium chloride. It washed out readily and did not build up after multiple shampoo-conditioning cycles. If you want/need more info, you can search the Uniqema website <http://www.uniqema.com/index.htm> for Forestall. Maurice -------------------------------------------------------- Maurice O.
