Guest guest
As Greg has mentioned, if you search the Contextual Psychology web site you'll get several hits for NYC. The link is at left on the main page - "Find an ACT therapist." I don't think you *can* work on ACT with a non-ACT therapist - even if they are sympathetic, there's just too big a gap between the ACT paradigm and the paradigm they have trained in. You might be able to work on ACT-style exercises with a cognitive behavioral therapist who is also into mindfulness; there are other "third wave" therapies out there beside ACT that have a somewhat similar approach, though ACT has unique elements and is probably the best-researched at this point. The Contextual Psychology web site has some suggestions for finding such alternative therapists. Be aware also that just because a therapist is listed on the ACT web site as practicing ACT doesn't mean they necessarily do it "by the book." I can tell you as a fact that there are at least some therapists who like being affiliated with ACT for career reasons, and who have done some ACT training, but when it comes down to it, they practice therapy their own way, adding in or leaving out stages and techniques as they see fit. The result is not ACT as you see it described in the workbook, which may or may not be OK with you. As the Contextual Psychology web site warns, "This list is entirely by self-nomination, so please do not treat it as a filtered list. It is more like a phone book." Can anyone recommend a good ACT therapist in New York City? My current therapist is sort of a post-Freudian -- very, very perceptive and she knows me very well, but as much as I like her, I'm finding it frustrating doing the ACT exercises on my own. A related question: does anyone have any advice for working on ACT with a non-Act therapist? Thank you. ..
Guest guest
Hi there, I am looking for an NYC therapist. The " Find an ACT Therapist " link provides names (e.g. Femenella) but not contact details! Can anyone please assist? Many thanks, > > As Greg has mentioned, if you search the Contextual Psychology web site > <http://www.contextualpsychology.com/> you'll get several hits for NYC. > The link is at left on the main page - " Find an ACT therapist. Guest guest
You're right, or at least I just had the same experience when I went to check. This is indeed a farkuckt (messed up) situation. I will e-mail the person who is in charge of the site for ACBS - they are very nice & should be able to either fix things or tell us what we're doing wrong. But really there should be contact info right there. > > Hi there, > I am looking for an NYC therapist. The " Find an ACT > Therapist " link provides names (e.g. Femenella) but not contact details! Guest guest
Okay - here is the drill, as I got it from the person in charge of the site - When you first get to the ACBS site, look for a link in the right hand column right below the user login - the link text is " Create a new account. " Click this & you will be able to create a free user account. Then log in, and when you get into the therapist list on " Find a Therapist, " you will find an additional " Contact " link on the page for any given therapist. Clicking the Contact link will allow you to send e-mail to them, at least in theory. Failing that, at least some of these therapists should be findable via other means - Googling for their name, the phone book, etc. > > > > > Hi there, > > I am looking for an NYC therapist. Guest guest
Great thanks I will try that. BTW I did google for Femenella but there aren't any pertinent hits. Thanks, Pete > > > > > > Hi there, > > > I am looking for an NYC therapist. Guest guest
In fact, this approach might well not work. As a therapist and ACBS member in NZ, I've just (again) checked out the page where people can enter their personal (professional)details, and where therapists get to enter their email details, this message is attached: " A valid e-mail address. All e-mails from the system will be sent to this address. The e-mail address is not made public and will only be used if you wish to receive a new password or wish to receive certain news or notifications by e-mail. " So, sorry, the suggestion might not work, but therapists do have the option of specifying what their website address is, and here you might find their email address (this is done for security reasons, as email addresses on websites are usually " encrypted " in some way, as any html editor will advise). Cheers, J. Wanganui, New Zealand Get the name you always wanted with the new y7mail email address. www.yahoo7.com.au/y7mail

Guest guest
> (this is done for security reasons, as email addresses > on websites are usually " encrypted " in some way, as > any html editor will advise). What I do for my Web site is use a tiny bit of Javascript to scramble the source HTML for email addresses so that spam robots can't read them, but browsers will display them correctly. Works wonderfully - I never get spam from the email address on my web site & people are able to use it as they normally would to open their email client & send email. The ACBS site should do the same. This and a few other changes would make it much easier to use the " Find a Therapist " page to actually find a therapist!
