LOL! Great image, and it works for me!Goldie the brain whisperer

i haven't finished reading the book yet (get out of your mind and into your

life) but i swear to god i keep thinking of "the dog whisperer"

http://www9. nationalgeograph ic.com/channel/ dogwhisperer/

http://www9. nationalgeograph ic.com/channel/ dogwhisperer/ video_preview_ 1.html

i don't watch the show very often but what i've caught, like tonight's

episode, cesar pokes the dog with his fingers and says "TCHSHH" to get the

dog's attention and then everything's fine. (i'm trying to be humorous

here) my mind is a whacked out bulldog that barks at everything that passes

by and chews the furniture and it needs the calming influence of a alpha

human to rein it in.

That's great . Your image/email came just as I was reading Get out Of Your Mind chapter on defusing - and how we could make up our own "defusing" techniques, including thinking of how a comedian or National Enquirer would say some of the stuff we say to ourselves. Thinking of a Brain-Whisperer is a fabulous choice! As I was saying to myself "I can't think up anything here" and starting to do the self-punishing rap for not being able to Do This ACT thing Right, I was in line at a pharmacy and the TV was blaring Roseanne, and so I thought of Roseanne's loud-wise-cracking-voice, being sarcastic and over-the-top, and I smiled.I guess she's a great example of an "Alpha Human",

eh?thanks,suz the brain whisperer

, that is so crazy! Im so glad you wrote that cause Ive been watching The Dog Whisperer for awhile and thinking the same thing! I saw Ceasar Milan's show and I instantly loved it. I dont watch much TV or have a dog, so it was kind of strange. There was just something there that couldnt quite put my finger on...until one night flipping channels in a hotel room it hit me -- what this man is doing is the exact same thing as what we are doing in ACT (or Buddhism, meditation, etc) This Mexican dog trainer is a Zen master! I sat there in a hotel room and watched two straight hours of episodes, in sort of a trance. For those who havent seen it, what happens on this show is that frustrated dog owners request that the famed 'Dog Whisperer' Milan come to their home and straighten out their pet. And these are the worst of the worst. A typical segment will start with a house in chaos -- little Fifi the poodle is flipping out, running in circles, chewing up the mail, barking at everything biting people and the human owners are about to have a nervous breakdown -- PLEASE stop Fifi! NO Fifi! Oh NO!!! BAD! NO! YOUR DRIVING ME CRAZY!!! they lock it up, they give it treats. They plead and threaten but the dog just gets worse and worse. In through the front door saunters this relaxed, smiling Mexican dude, just radiating cool. The dog is barking at him but he doesnt even look at it. the humans are wringing their hands describing their terrible dog which is by now running around on the sofa, yapping, humans pleading. Caesar usually says something like, "The dog is just being a dog, its YOU that I have to train.' He explains that from a dogs perspective, when the dog/human group is lacking calm leadership, the dog gets insecure and tries to run the house. The dog is in charge. When you get upset with a dog in this state, it gets worse. What the dog is asking for is calm assertive leadership in the present moment. Then Caesar puts the dog on a leash, and the dubious humans follow him outside. Milan simply walks, with the dog close at his side. At first the dog will try to struggle, but Caesar coolly gives the leash a short tug, and that TSSCH!! sound, and the dog snaps right out of it. Caesar is totally calm. He does not fight the dog. The dog sees very quickly that it has no control, that someone bigger is in calm control, and the strangest thing happens...the dog totally relaxes. You can see it. Down the street they go...relaxed human, relaxed and happy dog. The neurotic little monster that has terrorized its owners for years, in 10 minutes is completely transformed. The look on the humans' faces is priceless. Utter disbelief. This happens episode after episode, more or less the same every time. I think Ive seen him do this with about 100 dogs. And these dogs are really crazy...some of them large and violently aggressive. Ive never seen dogs like these. The epiphany I had watching this show was, the neurotic behavior these dogs are displaying is basically the same as human craziness -- obsessive compulsive, possessive, aggressive, phobic, anxious, anti-social, clinging. I was seeing myself and other people in these dogs. Maybe human reactions and dog reactions are the same. And this guy walks in and 'fixes' them. What is happening here? Its just what Caesar Milan is saying. The human dog owner creates a situation where the dog feels like it must assume control. It senses a power vacuum and it reacts. Anyone familiar with ACT or meditation can relate to this: the human mind does the same thing. We are all crazy because the mind is always compulsively reacting and trying to take control. As Steve says, that is its job. Luckily we have an extra brain, and, with practice, the ability to act and exist outside the minds reactions. Dogs cant. When Ceasar walks into the room, the dog changes, almost as if by magic. Why? For the first time, the dog encounters a human that does not react to it, in no way gets involved in its control struggle. Never mad at the dog, never frustrated, never scared. Not affectionate either. Just a calm, present engagement. He doesn't 'debate' the dog, or give affection, he simply shows it what he wants it to do. In the presence of Milan's 'vibe' of calm assertive non-reaction, the dog quits fighting. It feels safe and gives up struggling. A potent lesson! This is Mindfulness. When our 'monkey' brain starts going haywire, just like these dogs, we have the same ability Ceasar Milan has: calm, non-reaction...defusion in ACT-speak. When we observe calmly the mind's fearful reactions, without getting involved, without taking sides in any control drama, and move in whatever direction we value, the mind sees that it is in the presence of something much bigger and more powerful and it will relax and follow, like a happy dog walking at our side.I cannot recommend this show highly enough for ACT people! Learn from Ceasar Milan how to be a calm, assertive pack leader to your inner reactive mammal! >> i haven't finished reading the book yet (get out of your mind and into your > life) but i swear to god i keep thinking of "the dog whisperer"> > http://www9.nationalgeographic.com/channel/dogwhisperer/> http://www9.nationalgeographic.com/channel/dogwhisperer/video_preview_1.html> > i don't watch the show very often but what i've caught, like tonight's > episode, cesar pokes the dog with his fingers and says "TCHSHH" to get the > dog's attention and then everything's fine.
