Lynne,

I have not had what you described; however, my cousin who has bronchiectasis says that she coughs up blood sometimes. My pulmonary doctor always asks me if I do cough up blood. I wish that I could be of more help. Hopefully, someone else can give you some good advice.

Love, Norma

Dear Lynne,

I am sorry to hear about your bad ER experiences I am

sure we can all related. If you are able to stay away

from the hospital this weekend do get in touch with

your pulmonologist on Monday or at least the nurse and

arrange to see the specialist soon. I am concerned

about your back pain, because when I had similar bad

" sharp " back pain in May it was caused by strep.

pneumonia. The pneumonia was in the back of the right

lung and was quite a severe infection. I had held off

from going to the hospital for a few days, although in

hindsight I should have gone in sooner. By the time I

went to the hospital, my fever was high and

uncontrollable for a few days and I had a terrible

headache due to the infection and low 02 levels. My

body felt miserable. Anyhow, if you even suspect a

pneumonia try to get to an ER. I know ER doctors are

not always the best, but I would hate you to suffer

further lung damage by putting a possible infection

off. My back is also acting up again and in the same

way, so I believe that I am heading for pneumonia if

it is not already present. It generally does hit the

same place! Anyhow, best wishes to you and get a good

night sleep too ... It's only 9 p.m. Nova Scotia time,

but I'm exhausted and plan to be in bed and hopefully

fast asleep soon.

Hi Lynne,

It is hard to know if chest or back pain is muscular or pleural. It

could be inflammation of the rib cartilage from coughing and straining.

If the painful area hurts when you apply pressure, it is more than

likely muscular or inflammation of the rib cartilage, also known as

costo chronditis. I get this quite a lot, and it feels like a dagger is

sticking in when I take a deep breath. I use a hot water bottle or heat

pad on the painful area, which really helps. It does get better in

time, but can take a few weeks.

If you are not sure, see your doctor and have it checked out, it is

better to be cautious. The pain could also be symptoms of pneumonia,

and you definitely want to knock that on the head quickly!!

In my case, I have infection in my lungs all the time, so I can feel

feverish, but my temperature remains normal. I know when I'm getting

worse, as I feel plain lousy, the colour and quantity of the gunk

intensifies, and I am short of breath.

Take care, Lynne, get better soon, okay!!

lung pain

HI everyone,

I seem to remember a few months ago that some people

wrote that they can tell they have an infection

because their lungs hurt. I am not sure what this

means, what does it feel like? The reason I am asking

is because I've had a pain on the right side of my

back for about a week now. I am used to the aches and

pains from coughing and straining, but those usually

decrease or go away from me in a week or so. This pain

is getting worse. I don't have a fever or feel any

more tired than normal, but my cough has changed a

little bit. I also noticed that I have a bit of blood

around the edges of the gunk I spit up today. But this

could be because the weather here has been rainy today

and that always causes me problems. So my dilemma is

this: Do I go to the doctor or ER where they will do a

chest x-ray and try to put me in the hospital (they

always see the scarring on the x-ray and tell me its

new infection--EVERY TIME! Several times I have had to

leave AMA because I knew it wasn't pneumonia!) or do I

just wait it out? I hate to have to go to battle with

the doctors if this is just a pulled back muscle but

if it is the start of an infection I don't want to let

it go and get worse? Is it possible to have an

infection with no fever? I feel fine other than the

back pain, but it is hurting so much it is interfering

with my breathing treatments since it hurts badly when

I inhale. I know its always better to go to the doctor

just to be sure, but I was just wanting the advise of

this group. So in short, what does it feel like when

your lungs hurt and can you have an infection but no

fever, etc? I'd like to avoid the doctor if at all

possible!! LOL !!

Much love from Ohio,

Lynne

When you get that kind of pain which radiates from the side above the waist

and around to the spine, along with mild fever, it usually signifies

inflammation of the pleura. Especially if it hurts when you take a breath and

you just

feel you need to lie down. You should get to the doctor for a check-up and

xray. in Ca.
