Guest guest Posted May 5, 2003 Report Share Posted May 5, 2003 My name is and I'm new to all of this. Someone posted a message to our January 2003 board group so I came over. My daughter Heidi was born on January 2, 2003 and is flat on the left side of her head. At first I wasn't too concerned about it until my uncle saw it and urged me to go see the doctor. He is the grandfather of Ashlyn who had to have a helmet at 6 months. Her doctor said that they caught it just in time and if they had waited much longer she would have had to have surgery on it. My DH thinks it will round out as does Heidi's pediatrician but having a close family member experience it, I don't want to take any chances. So we will meet with a doctor trained in this on May 23 in Indianapolis In. I feel that its a precaution that I will willingly take. Thank you for having such a wonderful group. And I would love any advice, info, support, etc that any of you can hand out!! I'll try to take some pictures of her head this week and post them here. Are her ears and face assymetrical? The truth is that not all heads round out on their own. Many people experience good success with repositioning and that is always a good place to start. This takes TONS of hard work, but the payoff can be great. Check out www.plagiocephaly.org/support for some tips on repositioning. You might give this a try while waiting for your appointment. You're wise to make an appt with a specialist so that all options can be discussed. Sounds like your uncle is very observant. We talk a lot over here about saying something to others when we see people with babies whose heads are flat. Can I ask how your uncle approached you about it? And her left cheek seems a little bit chubbier than her right one. I mentioned this to the doctor at 2 months because of knowing that my cousin's daughter went thru this and he suggested that I position her so that she had to sleep on her right side more often. I tried that but she always seemed to wiggle out of it. I'll definitely check out that site for some tips in the meantime. My uncle works for MY grandparents. My grandma is the caregiver for Heidi while I'm at work. She's always been concerned about it since Ashlyn (my uncle's grandbaby) is also her great grandchild, as Heidi is. Both my grandma and my uncle knew that I was taking her to the doctor today for her 4 month checkup and my uncle told my grandma to make sure that I asked her ped about it. My ped didn't seem concerned at all and even asked me 3 times if I was sure that I wanted to go the route of the helmet/headband. He's a big advocate that they DON'T work. These people know their stuff. If it wasn't for this group, my dd wouldn't have her helmet today (and getting a wonderful round head)! My dd's 1st doctor didn't believe in the helmet either, I had to go to 3 different doctors until one would refer me to a cranio/facial specialist. Turns out that the doctor (that referred her) didn't really believe that the helmet would help her either, but referred me anyway to basically shut me up. At her last visit with him, he was very impressed with her improvement and immediately became a believer in helmet therapy. Good luck and keep us all posted. 4 months is a great age for correction. This can be a very confusing time especially when you husband & Dr feel it'll round out on it's own over time, but you're doing the right thing by following your gut & getting her evaluated by another Dr!! It is helpful having someone else close to you go thru this to help with any questions you have. Good luck and please let us know how the appt goes. Have you been repositioning Heidi w/any success? Keep plugging away - it's difficult but it's worth it!!! How's Ashlyn doing in her helmet? I had four doctors look at my son, all said that " it would round out on its own " , and it has a bit, but not as much as they said it would. I finally got referred to a neurosurgeon (my doctor did it to shut me up) and we will be getting the helmet in a couple of weeks (my son will be close to a year old).
