June,

I have been on Tobramycin 7.5 mls inhaled with a Pari nebulizer after my regular breathing treatment twice daily the last two weeks of each month since last July. I have not had to go back to the hospital for IV antibiotics except in March when I developed pneumonia. I was discharged from the hospital after the bacteria (strep) was found and took penicillin for 12 days. I will be 70 years old next month. My bronchiectasis was diagnosed four years ago although I think that I had it about four years prior to diagnosis and my allergist thought that my infections were due to allergies. I do have an allergy to mold, but that was not causing my coughing fits.

June,

I forgot to mention that I have osteoporosis, and my pulmonary doctor gave me Prednisone last December, and now the bone density in my hips is six times worse. My endocrinologist may have to put me on shots that cost $600 a month to reverse the bone loss. I am not going to take Prednisone again if at all possible.

Dear June,

I agree with Barb's message. Our lungs are so individual just like the rest of us.:o) Anyhow, it has been my experience that chestphysio and exercise are not enough to keep my lungs infection free. I also take various nebs and other meds. In my case despite everything that my doctors have tried with my help, my lungs still require monthly antibiotics. I used to require IVs 2-4 times per year, but now its every 4-6 weeks. My lungs are flaring up again which means another sputum sample. My doctors try to wait. The problem for them and for me is that I can be perfectly fine in the morning and very sick by night and in hospital. Sometimes we have to start the IVs before getting the cultures back and than the doctors will adjust meds according to culture results. Sick lungs do not always wait for treatment. In my case, my lungs have a lot of damage, so much, so that physio, exercise, and even nebs are not the answer. We are all so different.

Growing up I swam, played basketball, soccer, ball hockey, etc. not on professional teams but with family and friends. This is probably what helped to keep my lungs healthier.

Hope this is helpful,

Best Wishes and Hugs to You:0)
