Guest guest
Does anyone else have gastrointestinal upset and diarrhea from antibiotics besides me? When I was discharged from the hospital after they learned that I could be treated with penicillin orally at home, the doctor also gave me a prescription for Flagyl that I had taken in 1996 since I developed antibiotic associated diarrhea and had to be hospitalized at that time. The last two times that I have been hospitalized, I have had diarrhea from the IV antibiotics as well. I just wondered if I am the only one who has this problem. I have to be on a very bland diet: bananas, rice, applesauce and tea until this situation stabilizes. Norma in TX (U.S.)
Guest guest
Tina, I have eaten yogurt since I was diagnosed with osteoporosis (brittle bone disease) in 1992. After developing c difficule from an antibiotic in 1996 and having to be hospitalized with fluid deficit hypotension, I started taking acidophilus in addition to the yogurt. Since that time, occasionally I will develop diarrhea from taking antibiotics. They check for this bacteria, and if negative, I take Immodium. When I was hospitalized in July with growing pseudomonas, they put me on The Premier Probiotic Culturelle with Lactobacillus GG that I get at the compounding pharmacy where I purchase my Tobramycin for inhalation the last two weeks of the month. This time they thought that since it was near the Easter holidays that they would not have time to do the culture due to the holidays so gave me the Flagyl if diarrhea developed which it did. Thanks for sharing your information. Norma
Guest guest
Norma, forget the brat diet, go get yourself some lactobaccilus. The reason you get diarhoa from the antibiotics is because they kill off all the good bacteria in your gut along with the nasty bacteria in your lungs. By taking lactobaccilus/accidopholus you replace the bacteria. You can buy capsules at the pharmacy/healthfoodshop or in the UK they make little drinks, yakult is one brand. Live yoghurt also contains the same stuff. Take it between doses and up to a week after you finnish. It helps for Thrush too if you get that with antibiotics. only has to look at a bottle of antibiotics to get dioreah. Hope that helps you. Guest guest
Barb, If I had not lost so much weight, I would not be concerned. The next time I am going to ask to have a stool culture done as they have done before as the Flagyl certainly has some bad side effects. Thursday I have an appointment with the infectious disease doctor to see why my body aches so much after I go off an antibiotic. This first started last October after I was in the hospital in July for growing pseudomonas. My primary care doctor ran several C-Reactive Protein tests which all seem to be getting higher. He just wanted me to take an anti-inflammatory over the counter medicine. I want to know why this just started last October and wondered if it has anything to do with the bronchiectasis. Thanks for your input. Norma
Guest guest
Karin, You can be thankful that that part of your anatomy works well. Mine did not previous to the multiple antibiotics so probably the antibiotics are just irritating a problem that I already have. Guest guest
Norma, I get diarrhea off and on during my 10 days per month maintenance Amoxicillin. I don’t seem to have as much of a problem as you do though. Some of the children that I work with seem to get non-stop diarrhea from antibiotics. Their parents and doctors don’t seem to think that it is a concern. I, on the other hand, would not be able to deal with it continuously. Hope things improve for you. I tend to get oral thrush quite easily, and I find that eating a lot of yogurt and taking acidophillus daily helps with that. I have never really had problems with diarhhea from antibiotics, though- the one part of my anatomy which does work fairly consistently is my gut, lol!!! Guest guest
Norma, Do you think that it is the antibiotic itself that makes you ache so much or do you think that antibiotics trigger your arthritis? Some antibiotics make me ache terribly while I’m taking them, but the aches (other than the usual ones) go away after stopping. I have also wondered about what other problems might be a result of this disease. I’ve often thought that the parents that I have contact with at work take their children to a specific group of pediatricians who specialize in making sure the parents don’t have to miss any work. This particular group doesn’t seem to pay to much attention to the well being of their patients; therefore, they don’t really care if diarrhea, coughing, wheezing, fever, blue hands and lips, etc. occur. Hope you can solve your problem. Barb Re: Antibiotics and Gastrointestinal Upset Barb, If I had not lost so much weight, I would not be concerned. Guest guest
Barb, My problem is that I have body aches after I go off of antibiotics. My father and two of his brothers had rheumatoid arthritis. My primary care doctor has not recently checked for this problem. While I am on the antibiotics I do not have the body aches. Perhaps the infectious disease doctor will have some answers tomorrow. These body aches just started last October. Since I am 69 years old, it could be anything. Guest guest
I think I’ve mentioned this before on this group, but not sure. I have arthritis – two forms of it – as well as the Bronchiectasis. My rheumatologist has done research and says that many of arthritis sufferers (something like 85%) also have either Bronchiectasis or some other form of lung problems. His reckoning is that because they are both (arthritis and bronch) inflammatory diseases, they trigger each other. So… if you’re having say, a chest infection, it’s likely to trigger an arthritis episode. That is so true for me, so I’m sure he’s right. That may explain some of the aches and pains, because you can get that with arthritis.
