Hello Barbara - I don't post often but I do keep up with everyone. I'm 59 and my eyes have been deteriorating for the last 30 years. However in the last 2 years I have felt my vision fading fast. I never considered the steroids may be a problem. Do you know for sure that they can do this? I have noticed the last year or so I'm becoming more pear shaped even though my diet hasn't changed. I put this down to age and also perhaps to the inhaled steroids. Very interesting....

Side effects

Hi everyone,

It certainly has been quiet lately so I’ll ask a question that I’ve been meaning to ask for months but haven’t gotten around to doing. Has anyone besides me had vision problems cause by using inhaled steroids? What I had been suspecting for several years was confirmed a few months ago by an ophthalmologist. It’s kind of strange (or maybe just normal) that I was never able to find vision problems listed as a side effect to inhaled steroids.

Madeleine,

The ophthalmologist said that my vision

problem is due to the steroids. Shortly after I started using Pulmocort several years ago, I would get a sort of transparent

doughnut shaped brown area in the central vision in one eye. It would last about two or three weeks,

clear up for a while, then return. I still got it when I was switched to Advair but I could never find that side effect listed for

either product. When the strength

of my Advair was decreased, the problem lessened. I’ve only had it happen once in

the last year. The ophthalmologist

said that I have tiny spots of scarring on the central part of the retina

(probably due to being in the sun a lot over the years) and that fluid leaks

through the scarring into the air-tight area of my eye. And, yes it is associated with steroid

use. He assumed that I use the

inhaled steroids for asthma. When I

told him that it is for bronch he said “Oh. That’s not very common.” Lucky me.

I also put on an instant 10 pounds when I

started the steroids. That IS

listed as a side effect. I was

never a very big person to start with, so it was kind of a shock.

Barbara - thank you for the information. I will check these things next time I see my chest specialist in a few weeks and the eye specialist in a few months and the GP next week. Life gets tedious don't it?....

That happened to me, too. I grew up with bronch, but after college,

when I started having to go on inhaled steroids during winter- I am

symptom-free in summer- I gained ten pounds easily. It was quite a

shock.
