StageFright – Drama Therapy and Dissociation Co-led by Hodermarska & Lucy McLellan Saturday, January 13th, 2007 10:00 am – 5:00 pm This all-day workshop will

use drama therapy to address clinical and aesthetic aspects of dissociation and is designed for clinicians, teaching artists, and performers with an interest in drama therapy. What happens when our clients or we as clinicians, educators or performers dissociate while doing our work? What do these dissociative moments look like in our clients, in our selves, in dramatic roles, and in art? How can we approach these moments of disembodiment and disconnect with respect for the necessity of the event? How can we use the dramatic process to re-embody our selves and the people we work with in order to maintain the therapeutic goals of safe expression, containment, and mutual presence? The focus of this workshop is not to address the diagnosis and treatment of a dissociative disorder itself but, rather, to define dissociation in dramatic and clinical terms, using case examples from life, art, and literature. Client and therapist, artist and audience all experience moments in which there is a lack of presence. Typically a terrifying experience, dissociation can also serve as a complicated form of relief. The

disembodiment and disconnect characteristic of dissociation can offer the psyche an escape from the often overwhelming effects of traumatic stress. This workshop will explore disembodiment and re-embodiment using drama therapy (enactment, storytelling, and projective techniques) in order to discover ways to guide both client and therapist back into a realm of mutual presence. For Whom: Creative arts therapists, mental health practitioners, theater artists and those who are interested in exploring the therapeutic component of theatre for either personal growth or as a means to help others. Location: Judson Memorial Church 239 Street, between W. 3rd and Washington Square South. New York, NY 10012 Transportation: Take the A,C,E,B,D,F or V train to West 4th Street.
