Hi Barb,

That is good news, as once you get on the bandwagon of hospital IV’s, it’s hard to get off. I know my doctor is very reluctant to put me in hospital, but once the infection is out of control, it is my only option. It is a huge expense for a two week stay, and the medications are not cheap. Once they have cultured the bacteria (always pseudo with me) it is normal procedure to start with the cheaper antibiotics (e.g. gentamicin, tobramycin, etc.). However these are no longer effective for me, and I always need the “top shelf” stuff these days!! No wonder they are always pleased to get rid of me (lol)!

I am hoping that more effective oral antibiotics will soon become available and other options for home treatment.

Take care and keep well.

Bunny,

I’ve never had an IV treatment. I’ve only taken oral antibiotics or nebulized antibiotics. I think that most of the insurance companies in the U.S. don’t like to cover hospital stays so the doctors try to avoid them.

Bunny,

Since my surgery during the summer, my doctor has been treating me with Avelox.

It seems to keep the infection under control for about two to four weeks. I

have also had Pseudomonas infections. My doctor is considering another

bronchoscopy for new samples to culture.

It's winter around here now and gets pretty cold where I live. This is the

first Christmas in a number of years that I've been able to get out and shop,

visit, etc. without the usual total exhaustion. It's a nice change.
