First, I signed up for individual e-mails and I am not getting them. 1. Can anyone tell me how to fix that?

A) Hmmm, it often takes a few hrs to start receiving them. How long ago did you sign up for that? If you still have probs, let me know, I'll check it out.

2. What does ABCOP stand for and who are they?

"American Board for Certification in Orthotics & Prosthetics".3. Is the starband and docband made by the same people?

Nope, the STARband is casted by a local orthotist, then the head mold is shipped to FL where the actual band is made by Orthomerica. You can get info on Orthomerica at www.orthomerica.com

The DOCband is made by Cranial Technologies. www.cranialtech.com They have several locations througout the US, Canada & Spain. The only product Cranial Tech makes is the DOCband, where Orthomerica also makes other orthotics & prosthetic devices. Cranial Tech's clinicians cast the baby, then ship the head mold to their home office in Phoenix, AZ where the band is made. Cranial Tech's home office closely monitors & tracks each child's progress throughout the course of the child's treatment.

4. Why is there such a difference in price and training?

Just the way the 2 companies do it. Kinda hard to really explain I guess. I think Orthomerica feels the orthotists receive enough training in their regular orthotist classes they take prior to being able to treat patients. They do have a seciton in their reg. schooling that I think teaches about cranial molding devices, but that's it. Orthomerica offers addt'l training classes for orthotists to attend, but it's not mandatory. Orthotists volunteer for these courses.

Cranial Tech requires their orthotists/therapists to attend and 'graduate' a 4-6 wk training process at their home office prior to being allowed to treat plagio babies. They also hold bi-annual "refresher" courses that the clinicians must attend.5. What kind of training do they receive?

Answered above.6. Does my sons pediatrician monitor progress?

No, you need to follow up with the orthotist. Orthos usually see babies every week or biweekly, depending on the age and growth of the child. Of course you'll see your ped on & off throughout the process, but the orthotist is who's in charge of the bands.

Hope I helped some - so confusing :)

Thank you for your quick response. I'm just cruising around all of this info. There is so much of it! Please tell me if I am wrong here, the two bands are made from 2 different companys. One requires training and the other doesn't? I just worry about someone "molding" my son's head without training. It sounds scary, but I see that other parents on this board are doing it. We don't have insurance because my husband owns his own company and the employee's are all the he could afford at this time. I'm not really worried about the cost, just the effect it is going to have on Case's head. Thanks again. I think I will call his ped. to find out where treatment facilities are.

Well pretty much Sara. Orthomerica does not require their orthotists who use their STARbands to have "special" training to do so. Like I said, they do receive some training on it in their college (or whatever school they go to) prior to receiving their license. And they do offer add'tl training courses, but the courses are not required (although I personally think they should be, JMO).

Cranial Tech requires their clinicians do receive training prior to being allowed to treat plagio babies.

If you were to find a STARband orthotist with good experience, it can be great. We've had many happy STARband parents in our group w/good results. Experience is the key though.

Good luck! It can be very overwhelming!

Yes, she did!! How do you know so much? Yes, she said Cranial Tech. was on the North end of Dallas and that Hanger was on the Northeast end of Dallas. I called Hanger and they are going to have someone call me back, and I called CT and spoke with them and she told me that I could set up a consultation with them before I make my decision. I haven't spoke with my husband about this, but it sounds like a very good idea.

Hi Sara:

LOL, I know " so much " cuz I'm a lifer in the group!! hehe, been here

over 2.5 yrs already - yikes!!

I know of one parent who did not have a pleasant experience with

Hanger in Dallas and the STARband. So please, THOROUGHLY interview

the would be orthotist. This person had a woman orthotist who wasn't

very well experienced. Of course my daughter Abby had a bad

STARband ortho, however, one of our group moderators, 's

daughter rec'd a STARband from the same place Abby rec'd hers, but

had a different Orthotist & had very good results...so it all depends

on the orthotist.

Good luck with your decision!!

WOW Debbie, over 2.5 years!! That's great. Do you have your degree? lol I spoke with my husband about this and he doesn't think this is a decision we should make over the phone. He wants to go and visit both places before we decide. He is like me, this is our son's head and it should be treated with a lot of TLC. I called Case's Ped. and told him that we wouldn't be making a decision by Friday and as soon as we did, we would let him know. Now, I don't feel as pressured.

Sara,

VERY good idea to go and visit both places in person. That should really give

you all the information you need (plus a healthy dose of first impression) to

make an informed decision. Let us know what you think of each of the places.

You really should make your own informed decision so I think you're doing

just the right thing.

I'm waiting for my degree to come any day now!! LOL, heck I should have a degree at this point! hehe.

Good for you not rushing into anything & it's definitely best to meet the orthos face to face. You're doing such a great job researching this Sara! Please keep us posted.

Hi Sara:LOL, I know "so much" cuz I'm a lifer in the group!! hehe, been here over 2.5 yrs already - yikes!!I know of one parent who did not have a pleasant experience with Hanger in Dallas and the STARband. So please, THOROUGHLY interview the would be orthotist. This person had a woman orthotist who wasn't very well experienced. Of course my daughter Abby had a bad STARband ortho, however, one of our group moderators, 's daughter rec'd a STARband from the same place Abby rec'd hers, but had a different Orthotist & had very good results...so it all depends on the orthotist.Good luck with your decision!!Debbie Abby's mom DOCGradMIFirst, I signed up for individual e-mails and I am not getting them. > > 1. You can get info on Orthomerica at www.orthomerica.com The DOCband is made by Cranial Technologies. www.cranialtech.com They have several locations througout the US, Canada & Spain. The only product Cranial Tech makes is the DOCband, where Orthomerica also makes other orthotics & prosthetic devices. Cranial Tech's clinicians cast the baby, then ship the head mold to their home office in Phoenix, AZ where the band is made. Cranial Tech's home office closely monitors & tracks each child's progress throughout the course of the child's treatment.> > 4. Orthotists volunteer for these courses.Cranial Tech requires their orthotists/therapists to attend and 'graduate' a 4-6 wk training process at their home office prior to being allowed to treat plagio babies. They also hold bi-annual "refresher" courses that the clinicians must attend.> > 5. What kind of trainin! g do the y receive? Answered above.> > 6. Does my sons pediatrician monitor progress? No, you need to follow up with the orthotist. Orthos usually see babies every week or biweekly, depending on the age and growth of the child. Of course you'll see your ped on & off throughout the process, but the orthotist is who's in charge of the bands. > Hope I helped some - so confusing :) Debbie Abby's mom DOCGradMI> > > > For more plagio info
