, why do you say prednisone is a horrible drug? Just wondering if you've had the same experiences as me. I have often taken a week's pack and it has knocked a flare-up out, but this time I am on a month pack and it has made me very anxious. Is this normal? Also, has anyone tried hydroxychloroquine? It's supposed to be taken long term and keep flare ups away, but it is making me incredibly dizzy. I'd lamost rather the flare ups if I wasn't afraid of intrenal organ damage. Thanks! Strecker wrote: HI sNAKE,The ankle/knee surgery you describe that preceded the outbreak of EN is very interesting to me. You aren't the first member to describe injury prior EN. We discussed this a while ago on the group site. Injury is not considered to be an EN trigger, but as you know little research is done on EN and many triggers have yet to be discovered and written up.From a practical standpoint what is equally important to research besides triggers and causes is treatment. We can

at least hope that the meds used to treat related disorders will also help those with EN. There is no specific EN treatment. Have you tried potassium iodide [sSKI]? It works wonders for some of us, and if works fast if it will work at all. You don't take it long term, as it can damage the thyroid, but we are just talking about a month or less of treatment and your thyroid can be monitored by a simple blood test to make sure you are a candidate. Also [and I hate to even suggest it], there is prednisone. It is a horrible drug, but it might work and we are talking SHORT term. I am only mentioning this as you are suffering so badly and your livilhood is at stake if you are struggling to work which requires traveling. Neither SSKI nor Prednisone cures EN. It just can knock it back to remission. From the length of

time you were hospitalized I am sure they have run every test in the book to find the triggering factor. Sometimes you have to treat symptomatically when a patient is idiopathic. I wish I could be of more help.Love,idio. EN since '68

Hi ,

No, I haven't ever taken prednisone, but I know that it can have nasty

side effects. It is often called " the druge we love to hate " . It can

make you feel better, but look at the side effects, especially if

taken long term. And long term at low dose seems worse than short term

at high dose. Osteroporosis and diabetes are two side effects of

prednisone use.

<<For some patients, the negative side effects of this powerful drug

far outweigh the benefits that can be derived. It may quickly stop a

flare in its tracks, but at the price of altered physical appearance,

mental instability, and other serious health risks.>>

I don't have personal experience with Plaquenil [GENERIC NAME:

hydroxychloroquine].

Here is a link about side effects of plaquenil:

Anyone taking any med should check out the side effects, especially

I personally cannot take prednisone and any other steroid like it. I

was given eye drops for an injury a few years ago and I hallucinated.

It was just the 'seeing spiders crawl up and down my body'. I

experienced all tactile hallucinations. Plus the scarier side effect I

had was the fact that objects disappeared from my eye sight that were

actually still there. This happened while I was driving. Needless to

say I was scared out of my wits with things popping in an out of my

line of sight. I didn't know what was real and what wasn't.

That is scary, hallucinations are a possible side effect. I am usually fine on short term prednisone, but I have been on it for over 3 weeks now and it;s making me very anxious. My dosage of hydroxychloroquine is 200MG twice a day. My doctor is

hoping I only have to be on it a short while.
