Preeminent psychiatrist Irvin D. Yalom, MD will give a lecture on the

unique processes of therapy and fiction. He will discuss group

psychotherapy and his new novel, The Schopenhauer Cure, which is, in

part, a response to the misunderstandings about group therapy. Yalom

addresses the inaccurate and unfavorable depictions of group therapy in

the media. The Schopenhauer Cure is a teaching novel that centers on

group leader techniques including selection of patients, preparation,

self-disclosure and the here-and-now focus. Yalom will discuss coping

with fatal illness and the differences between a philosophic and a

dynamic therapy approach. He will also explore the contributions of

19th-century philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer to the field of

psychotherapy. A book signing will follow the lecture with books

available for purchase.

Irvin Yalom is an Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at Stanford

University of Medicine in Stanford, California. Dr. Yalom has been

involved in group therapy for forty-five years. He is the bestselling

author of Love's Executioner, Lying on the Couch and The Gift of Therapy

as well as the world’s most widely used textbook on psychotherapy, The

Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy.
