Yalom, MD will give a lecture on the unique processes of therapy and fiction. He will discuss group psychotherapy and his new novel, The Schopenhauer Cure, which is, in part, a response to the misunderstandings about group therapy. Yalom addresses the inaccurate and unfavorable depictions of group therapy in the media. The Schopenhauer Cure is a teaching novel that centers on group leader techniques including selection of patients, preparation, self-disclosure and the here-and-now focus. Yalom will discuss coping with fatal illness and the differences between a philosophic and a dynamic therapy approach. He will also explore the contributions of 19th-century philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer to the field of psychotherapy. A book signing will follow the lecture with books available for purchase. Irvin Yalom is an Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at Stanford University of Medicine in Stanford, California. Dr. Yalom has been involved in group therapy for forty-five years. He is the bestselling author of Love's Executioner, Lying on the Couch and The Gift of Therapy as well as the world’s most widely used textbook on psychotherapy, The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy.
