Guest guest
Our daughter had a DX of OCD until 3rd grade. We had a 504 plan in place, now we have an IEP. The sources of the stress need to be pinpointed and then each one dealt with. We had a neuropsch test done in 3rd grade and found out she had a non verbal learning disorder. Our school would never had detected this. Our daughter has a diagnosis of Asperger's and lots of kids with AS also have OC traits. There are so many problems to address in some children. We have had so many accomadations in place over the years I don't know where to begin. Almost of the accomodations are to deal with anxiety, OCD and social anxiety. Here are some of them: seating next to a supportive peer, a buddy assigned to her, no overstating any health issues, she gets to be at the front or end of lines, " ONLY POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT " no scolding or criticism. We got her occupational therapy to help her with her sensory issues, they also work on helping a child be aware of there arousal levels and do things to calm themselves down. A lot of child like OT. It won't be a cure, but if she is afraid of doing things with her body, movement PE etc it will help with that. There are many other ideas if you are interested. We have found that our counselor had to advocate for all of the accomodations. Rarely is anything modified because I asked. Do you have a 504 plan in place? If you have a DX you can classify her under other health impaired and get some of these accomodations in place. Probaly you counselor will have to write a note specifing what is needed.
