A Mother’s Response to Recent Media Publications on “Autism and Vaccines.â€

Letter written to the Wall Street Journal

“The new vaccines kept coming, each containing a tiny amount of mercury as a

preservative. For nearly a decade, until regulators realized the problem in

1999, children who received all the recommended vaccinations could have absorbed

an elevated amount of the toxin by the time they were 6 months old.â€

" I feel badly that I didn't pick it up, " acknowledged an adviser to the

National Immunization Program, Dr. Neal Halsey of s Hopkins University, at a

hearing in Cambridge three years ago.

I appreciate the above quote from Dr. Halsey. It does not comfort me, or

change anything for my child, who will most likely require constant supervision

for the rest of his life. And I doubt it will comfort my now 12 year old

typical son who will someday bear the burden of caring for his little brother

long

after my husband and I are gone. But I appreciate the admission nonetheless.

I appreciate the truth in it.

The below title that recently was published in a newspaper, “Autism and

Vaccines: WS Journal Editorial Lashes Out at Autism Parents,†saddens me, but

doesn't surprise me, that the press is still avoiding plain and simple truth.

The publication continues by printing, “For the past few years, a small

coterie

of parents has taken to loudly claiming that thimerosal, a preservative used

in vaccines for 60 years, is the cause of autism in their children. Their

allegations have scared many parents about immunizations, sent trial lawyers

scurrying to sue the few remaining vaccine makers, and inspired an ugly

political

dispute. Lost in the controversy has been a little thing called science.â€

That last sentence is the reason for this letter. No, dear editors, science

has not been lost. In the world we live in today – we have more science than

we know what to do with. We can create life outside of the body, we can clone

life, we can write the blueprints of life, and we have the technology to

search for life on other planets. We have enough science. Probably too much.

What has been lost in the controversy, and in the world today, is a big thing

called “truth.â€

Truth is absolute. There are few things more absolute in this life than

truth.

But as complex as truth seems, it’s really quite simple.

Another thing that is getting confused in the controversy – is wording. To

say that “Smoking causes cancer†can be misleading. Smoking in itself does

not directly cause cancer. It is the harmful toxins in smoking, that trigger an

immune response that can then lead to cancer under the right circumstances.

Not everyone who smokes will get cancer. But some will. Hence the warning on

the side of every pack of cigarettes.

With “Vaccines and Autism,†- the problem has been that parents did not get

the benefit of a warning of the dangers of the cumulative effects of the

toxins in vaccines until it was too late.

The absolute truth is that thimerosal is toxic if ingested, injected, or

inhaled in excessive amounts. No person in their right mind can refute that

science. The “hotspot†is that it is in vaccines which are mandated by the

government. If thimerosal was added to milk as a preservative – we would not

be

having this heated debate. It would have been immediately recalled and law

suits for damage would be allowed and justified. It is the fact that the

thimerosal we are talking about is in the holier-than-thou VACCINES that is the

problem. Its one thing to blame the Dairy Farmers – but its another thing to

blame

the government.

There are many published warnings for pregnant women to not eat fish because

of the danger of excessive amounts of mercury. No one in the press is

refuting that.

There are many studies on the danger of mercury in fillings. No one in the

media is refuting that.

Mercury-style thermometers have been done away with in hospitals. No one in

the media is refuting that decision.

But that same class of toxin that is in vaccines ---- now that is different!

That can’t cause neurological damage. That can’t be harmful. That

can’t

lead to chronic illnesses like asthma. That can’t lead to disorders like

ADD/ADHD, Learning Difficulties, and Autism Spectrum Disorders. It’s in

vaccines! Vaccines are good! Vaccines save lives!

It's the same class of toxin - but the media calls us " crazy " " irrational "

and " uninformed " just because our children happen to have been poisoned by the

toxins in vaccinations; and not the fish, fillings, or thermometers.

Now who is crazy, irrational, and uninformed?

One other thing besides truth and wording has been lost in the controversy.

And that is motive. Our children are already damaged. Why should we care

what happens to anyone else's child? How will that help us? It won't. What

have we got to lose by sharing our knowledge? Nothing! But we do share our

knowledge and caution with other parents. We do it because we care. Even if

every parent whose child was damaged by vaccinations was allowed to be part of a

lawsuit - we would most likely be dead before we received one dime. And

still, no amount of money will change the fact that our child was damaged. So

it's not all about money. Yes, we would welcome financial assistance for the

long-term care and medical expenses. But that is not the only motivation.

What motive does the government, medical establishment, and media have for

denying any damage?

That they could lose everything: Money, credibility, money, pride, money.

One more absolute truth – I am one of those “small coterie of parents that

has taken to loudly claiming that thimerosal, a preservative used in vaccines

for 60 years, is the cause of autism in their children,†– and you know

what?

Would the world be a much healthier and peaceful place if more of us would

stand up for truth no matter what the obstacle?
