Joan, YOU ROCK!!!! Keep up the good work and congrats on getting up early to

do your workout..I know that can be a killer sometimes..when I first started

Taebo and was doing it before work there were times when I just thought I

couldn't move that early..after a couple 21dc it just kinda became habit for

me..and not that its easy everyday, but definitely easier..I definitely make

sure that I stretch out real good in the morning after a good nights sleep,

and i know it sounds corny, but I don't like a big bright light that

early..so I light several scented candles instead..the aroma seems to lift my

spirits, it seems like a more spiritual thing to me..and I just enjoy

it...anyways, I seem to be long winded today..but really congrats and heres a

cheer to the rest of your 21DC!!!!

I hate bright lights and have 'fairy lights' (like you hang on

Christmas trees) all round the house, and they cast a lovely 'glow'

without the danger of candles.

I workout in my bedroom, and the arch of lights over my bed gives it

a good atmosphere when it's dark outside

Jill

who's brother has lights in the house and garden, so perhaps it's in

the 'genes' lol

Welcome Holly & Dave! You will learn a lot lurking here but feel free to ask

questions, too. We've got people who've been dealing with OCD for a lifetime and

some for only a few weeks or months.

I know this group has been a lifesaver for me several times over the past year

or so since my daughter (now 9) was diagnosed.

Hi Holly and Dave! I think when OCD " arrives " and disrupts everything, we

parents often get seemingly obsessed with reading/learning about OCD. The OCD

Foundation website has great info, of course. Another I like is Western Suffolk

(Dr. Fred Penzel) and the articles/info there:

http://westsuffolkpsych.homestead.com/Articles.html

And also this site has several conditions/info and the education stuff is great

too:

http://www.tourettesyndrome.net/ocd.htm

Well, with the recent diagnosis, are you looking for a therapist or have you

luckily found one? Many parents (including me) found that to be really hard,

finding someone to treat children or who was experienced in actually treating

OCD.

>

> Thanks for letting us join the list.  We are Holly & Dave and we have three

kiddos, ages 6, almost 4, and 2.  Our six year old has a very recent diagnosis

of OCD and we are trying to fly up the learning curve as quickly as possible.

We will most likely lurk here for quite awhile, but may pop in with a question

here and there.

Holly & Dave,

Yes, makes a good point. Learning about the mind has become my obsession :

) Now, my past time reading is about neurology and immunology. Now there's some

great party conversation, eh?

At least here, you'll be among like-minded people. My son is also 6. I went

through a period of mourning and worrying, felt very sorry for myself and my son

that he wasn't going to have a care-free childhood. But we have gotten past

that and are making much progress with family therapy and understanding how to

cope with our unique version of normal.

When I first joined this group last fall and people would try to assure me it

would get better, I never believed them. Ok, maybe it got better for them, but

how could I know it would get better for my family? There are no sure things,

but I can tell you that once you get past the shock and mourning, it does get

easier to deal with. Not easy, but easier.

Welcome to the group,

Welcome, Holly. Glad you found us.

The thing that helped us most was learning about OCD. Just understanding the

OCD better, made us understand what our son was going through, so much better.

There are some great books out there, if you haven't found and read them

already, that explains OCD well and helps you to understand the treatment that

works, versus the things that don't. Some of our favorites are. . .

What to do when your Child has Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder by Aureen

Pinto Wagner Ph.D.

Freeing Your Child from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder by Tamar E. Chansky

Helping Your Child With Ocd: A Workbook for Parents of Children With

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder by Lee Fitzgibbons and Cherry Pedrick

Talking Back to OCD by March

The last two are workbooks that walk you through CBT and ERP the only therapy

proven to help with OCD.

Jump in at any time if you have questions. Everyone here is happy to share what

has worked for them.

Welcome, Sharon. I'm glad you decided to jump in and introduce yourself. :o)

Glad you found us and are here too.

How was your daughter when your husband stayed home with her? Did he notice

lots of OCD issues? Or did it only escalate with this change of you staying

home with her? Just curious.

Change is always hard for those with OCD. Our son always reacted badly too it

too. He seems to have become more accepting of it now that he is older (17). .

More flexible in general, which is a relief.

The flaring up and calming down of OCD is common. Our son's OCD and waxed and

waned to the extreme throughout his life. Sometimes being so bad that he

couldn't function at all, yet other times handling things pretty well, with just

some quirks.

It sounds like you are on the right track for treatment. I hope this therapist

works out for you. The ERP is so, so important to them improving. It's great

that is ready to do it, that is half the battle right there. . .Their

readiness.

Let us know how it goes. :o)

Welcome ,I am so glad there will be another IBCLC/LLL in NC.I live in NYC but grew up in Fayetteville and my family is still there.Leigh Anne O'Connor, LLL, IBCLCSent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerryFrom: -LLL Date: Sun, 20 Sep 2009 13:33:05 -0400To: < >Subject: Introduction Hi there! I joined the group last week after I heard about it from a private practice LC I met in Florida (Hi Ellen!). I am a LLL Leader and awaiting results from IBLCE...waiting...waiting... In the meantime, I’m trying to put my ducks in a row so that I’m ready to roll when I get the results. I’m working on the hope that I passed, but if not it’s back to the drawing board as far as retaking. Interestingly, I have no feel for how I did, so we’ll see. I live in NC and plan to do a mixture of working with a local Pediatrics network as a contractor and holding some breastfeeding classes and seeing private pay clients as need arises. I’m trying to come up with a plan for the Pediatricians that will work for them and their patients and allow me to have a bit of a flexible schedule. I have questions, but I will post them separately from my intro. Thanks a bunch! Statesville, NC

Thanks Leigh,

There are quite a few IBCLCs in the Charlotte area and also in the Triangle, but I’m in Statesville, where the options are slim and the only LCs are affiliated with the local hospital. I want to do a mix of things so that I can serve more than one section of the population since there are a lot of people out of jobs right now with the Freightliner layoffs and so many need more help than what I’ve been able to do as an LLLL (which I will continue to do as well).

Hi all,

As I just joined this Yahoo group, I should let you all know a bit about me.

I sat the IBCLE exam this past July, and I am hopefully waiting for my exam

results. While I'm waiting, I'm also preparing for an international move back

to the US, where I want to start a private practice. Starting a business is all

new for me, so I have lots of questions. I'm also enjoying reading the list

archives.

I am the mother of two young boys, and I do volunteer breastfeeding counseling

now.
