Hi,

I just wanted to let you know that I have had the same feelings that you are

having now. My delivery didn't involve any forceps or anything, and

(my cute little helmet head :]) doesn't have either. His head was big at

birth, and was a little misshapen. However, my feelings are that I could

have corrected it by watching how he slept from the very beginning. He got

used to sleeping on the crooked side. We thought that it was still part of

the crookedness from the delivery when he were noticing the flatness on the

back of his head. We found out at two months by our Dr. to start turning

his head, and stretching the neck muscles. His head improved so much after

that, that I felt guilty for not starting that soon enough so that he

wouldn't have to have the doc band.

However, I have now come to the conclusion that it is not my fault. I can't

rid myself of all of the guilt, but I now put most of the blame on the fact

that I had received no information nor had I ever heard of plago until this

happened. Nor had anyone I've discussed this with. This really should be

information that new parents are made aware of. And I am thinking about

starting a program to inform expecting and new mothers.

If I had known what to do when I brought my son home, I would have been able

to prevent this. And I'm thinking that you would have done the same. I am

sure you had no idea of the things we need to do as parents to prevent this,

therefore you hold none of the blame.

As for your husband, I hope he is as supportive as my husband is. He is

constantly reassuring me about this--that it is not my fault. He couldn't

be a better husband or Daddy. The only thing is that he doesn't believe

that it could have been prevented...and I know now that it could have been

if I had been aware of it.

This was all a just rambling, but I hopeit makes you feel better. Let me

know if you'd like. :)

To Tammy

Just wanted to let you know that got his band on Monday (today is

thurs.) He doesn't even realize that he has anything on his head, I think.

I was worried about the same thing as we have the calmest little boy. He

hardly ever cries (only when hungry or extremely tired), and just smiles and

looks around all the time. He is the same little boy, and still looks " oh

so cute " so don't worry at all. I know that a lot of babies sweat a lot

from what the Dr. says, but hardly does at all, so not all do. It has

gone better than I ever thought. I still can't wait 'til it's over, but

it's not too bad.

Good Luck

Tammy-

The band will not control side to side turning

the flat spot is protected by the open area behind the affected area. They

can't lay flat anymore on that spot.

we spotted re-positioning once we got the band. I know ' " Mum " :)

still does it because they can position him to stretch out the neck muscle.

For us it was too exhaustive to be honest.

Abby did not have trouble sleeping & once she was able to roll over at night,

I knew I could not 100% control her sleeping position. She prefered tummy

sleeping-once she learned to roll over (but now back to back sleeping!) She

did not seem to mind the band at night. Kimry

Tammy:

I am in the same boat with my ped...he did not refer us, gave the same sort

of comments ( is also a preemie)and would not write a prescription.

To top it off, I have since been labeled an " overaggressive parent " at that

office. I found this out when I took another child in for an appointment

and I read her chart while we were waiting. We have a well baby visit next

week for and and I have been asking myself the same

question...what can I say to tell the ped that he was wrong????

The only thing I have come up with is to take pictures of 's head

before treatment, and then take the band off to show the changes. We will

be in it almost 1 month at that time and even today we see improvement. I

have a packet of materials to give him and I am letting him know that we

will be changing peds. I will not continue to go to a practice where I am

labeled overaggressive for looking for the best treatment for my child. And

I will not continue to trust a dr who is not open minded to treatments.

I think the proof is in the showing...we need to give visible evidence that

the bands/helmets do work. I'm sure they will say something like " we'll

this would have happened on its own " (without intervention). My response

to that is " I am not willing to take that risk. Would you be with your own

child? And how would you explain it to him if it didn't correct. "

Best of luck to you,

Sue

I would be glad to help but I was also thinking on something along the lines

of getting the back to sleep post cards changed()the ones in the dr's

offices now) to include some of this info, Just a suggestion since they are

most likely to be seen before there is a problem and help thoses with early

recognition. - Liz

You know, there are advantages to being an "overaggressive parent". The doctor knows you're more likely to jump if they do something wrong or don't do something at all. So, I would like to think, they take better care of your child.

When Grace saw he "old" doctor with her band on, he was very surprised and please at her progress. He even asked for information regarding the helmet/band therapy. I would wager he will look on future kids with "favorite spots" (as he termed Grace's flat spot in her charts) with more interest and pursue treatment for them more aggressively.

Tammy:I am in the same boat with my ped...he did not refer us, gave the same sortof comments ( is also a preemie)and would not write a prescription. To top it off, I have since been labeled an "overaggressive parent" at thatoffice. I found this out when I took another child in for an appointmentand I read her chart while we were waiting. We have a well baby visit nextweek for and and I have been asking myself the samequestion...what can I say to tell the ped that he was wrong????The only thing I have come up with is to take pictures of 's headbefore treatment, and then take the band off to show the changes. We willbe in it almost 1 month at that time and even today we see improvement. Ihave a packet of materials to give him and I am letting him know that wewill be changing peds. I will not continue to go to a practice where I amlabeled overaggressive for looking for the best treatment for my child. AndI will not continue to trust a dr who is not open minded to treatments.I think the proof is in the showing...we need to give visible evidence thatthe bands/helmets do work. I'm sure they will say something like "we'llthis would have happened on its own" (without intervention). My responseto that is "I am not willing to take that risk. Would you be with your ownchild? And how would you explain it to him if it didn't correct."Best of luck to you,Sue----- Original Message -----From: Duffy, Tammy <tammy_duffy@...><Plagiocephalyegroups>Sent: Friday, May 19, 2000 3:03 PMSubject: RE: Pity Party Revisited> Thanks Kendra!>> Now lets talk pity party - I just had the worst conversation with my ped.> Not to bore you with all the details on how we got to this conversationbut> to share some comments that really set me off...>> He said he would not take an assertive role in recommending the band for> Grayson (asked him to help with insurance). Believe me, there are advantages. When I call & want an appt, I get an appt.

They might think I am a pian in the a**, but I am usually right on the money

when one of the kids is sick or needs services outside of what the ped. can

provide. And another tip, it is important to make nice with your

authorization dept. After all was finalized w/Abby's band, I sent her a

thank you card. Then I sent her a pic of Abby wearing her band. She is the

ONLY picture on her bulletin board. You can really get screwed if the auth.

dept. grinds its wheels! Kimry

Yes-12 -16 weeks depending on growth spurts.

They also mentioned that sometimes 2 bands are needed, but that we would not

be certain until end of band 1. She started so early (wearing at 4.5 months)

that they were confident that after band 1, she could still achieve

correction with band 2. And she did, you could see the difference in the

measurements from end of band 1 to end of band 2. Kimry

Hi everyone! Just wanted to post and let you know that Grayson got his band

on May 23 - Tuesday. It came in early. We weren't expecting to get it

until today. (By the way, this is my 2nd post - my first one still hasn't

shown up so I thought I would write again - hopefully, you will not be

reading the same post twice).

Grayson has done very well. He wore the band 3 hours on Tuesday. He did

not sleep in it that night. On Wednesday, he wore the band 6 hours - he had

a good red spot on his forehead so we waited to put the band back on between

skin checks. The band was adjusted on Thursday and he wore it all day and

slept through the night. No red spots the next morning - yeah! Grayson has

been a champ. He only fusses when you put the band on. He doesn't like to

sit still. The only challenge we have had is nursing. It certainly is not

comfy. That should get better with time. The daycare teachers have been

wonderful in helping out with this process - timing the clearing of the red

spots, etc.. They call Grayson their " little linebacker " . I have gotten so

many questions from the parents. One parent was even rubbing her kids head

and checking it out while talking to me.

We will be decorating the band this weekend. I would like to put his name

across the front with a train across the back. Anyone seen letters or train

stickers anywhere? Also, can someone tell me (again) the best varnish or

clear cover to put over the stickers??

By the way, I plan to go to Grayson's 6 month appt with before pictures and

literature about the band. He will be in the band 3 weeks at the time of

the appointment. Based on what I have read - there will most likely be some

improvement. Maybe the band will raise some interest since I am the only

parent to ever ask for a referral for the band in 11 years..... I'll let

you know what happens.
