Guest guest
There is a lot of confusion and mis information about oils. Canola is bad...there is no such plant as a " canola " , so the term " vegetable oil " is misleading. Canola stands for " Canada Oil " , not a plant. It is made from a variety of genetically modified things. Peanut and corn oil are ALL GMO. I press my own sunflower oil, but use even very little of that-I have lost my taste for oily things over time. If I sautee, I do it in a small amount of homemade raw milk butter, or my sunflower oil (which is healthy and available at health food stores) Coconut oil is great stuff-it has long chain fatty acids, and the " saturated " fat in it is easily assimilated by the body. The biggest issue with most oils is that they are usually manufacted in the same factories that process the GMO stuff, so getting a non contaminated one is next to impossible. Olive oil is great in moderation if it virgin, cold FIRST pressed, and comes from a facility that does JUST that type of oil. I use a Piteba press to make oil-very messy, very little yield for the work, but a lovely oil. If I couldn't make my own, I would buy sunflower oil. > > >> > > > >> > I'm so sorry. Guest guest
I always go for extra virgin olive oil though that is probably a waste as regular olive oil would probably do well for sauteeing. The extra virgin is more expensive and should be used on salad dressings where it is eaten in a more pure state. I just can't see having several kinds of olive oil on hand. I do have grape seed oil and canola oil on hand. I don't use the coconut because it is saturated. It may be one of those things where first this is not healthy and then it is or vice versa. I just don't go for saturated or trans fats.  Many cooks use peanut oil for deep frying, which I don't really do anymore. So I don't have that. For frying, it is the heat that affects the oils and some won't hold up and can be worse for you, like using olive oil to fry above a certain temperature.  I realize that many on here use the coconut oil but I don't understand at this point since it has saturated fats. Even my margarine is made from oil and has fatty fish oils in it. But it is certainly processed and who knows what else it has in it.  Carolyn Wilkerson  To: sproutpeople Sent: Monday, March 26, 2012 9:04 AM Subject: I have a question about oil!!  HI all. I have read that the best oil for frying (regardless what the norm is) is extra virgin coconut oil. It's a saturated fat but it's healthy. That's what I read. There is also the red oil (Palm Fruit Oil). NOT Palm Kernel oil. Which I was once given. It's supposed to be the healthiest oil on the planet. So here is my question. If one has the money of Trump, and one likes to cook, what is the absolutely best oil that money could buy (for sauteeing, etc.) Anyone know the definite answer? Thanks, Melody > >> > > >> > I'm so sorry. I would love for you to be here and I would come sit on the > >> > front row. > >> > Beverly > >> > Texas > >> > > >> > > >> > EW!! Guest guest
I read someplace that even EVO can't be relied on as being first pressed. They get more money for EVO and most comes from Italy. I read that Italians laugh at us as there isn't much of real EVO and they keep it for themselves. Our palate isn't good enough to be able to taste the difference in what they give us. That was discouraging. If it is not expensive, then it isn't EVO, even if it says it is.  Your home pressed sunflower oil sounds fantastic. With how little you get is why the real EVO is so expensive, it, too, is precious and little of it.  I sure didn't know Canola oil was Canadian oil from various plants. Maybe Safflower oil is better. What don't I know about that?  Is brown sugar just as bad as white sugar? What about turbinado? Carolyn Wilkerson  To: sproutpeople Sent: Monday, March 26, 2012 9:48 AM Subject: Re: I have a question about oil!!  There is a lot of confusion and mis information about oils. Guest guest
I know people like Dr. Ox tout safflower oil, but I haven't ever used it or researched it, so I don't know much about it, except that it is probably processed in the same facility as other oils, such as soy and corn (this is not likely an issue for anyone unless you have allergies like I do-cross contamination is a huge issue for us) As for sugar, I use evaporated cane juice, which although it is called " juice " is actually in crystal form and readily available where regular sugar is sold. I rarely use ANY sugar, but I keep that on hand for when my mother is here and likes sugar in her coffee. It is less processed than bleached white sugar, and retains a few more minerals from the molasses that is left in it, giving it its pale blond color. > > > >> > > > > >> > I'm so sorry. Guest guest
Yes, I don't think saturated fat is necessarily bad for one – see, so that affects my opinion. I do think GMOs are not healthy. That also affects my opinion. Coconut oil has a high percent of medium chain fatty acids, is easily absorbed and a good source of energy. It has been used in alzheimer treatments - http://www.coconutketones.com/ - this is the website of the woman doctor who actually treated her husband with it – you can see the changes in his mental status in his drawings – and there are some good videos, and you can heat it without creating trans-fats. Canola has trans-fats – but others may not worry about trans-fats. I agree, everyone should do their own research, and what is right for one person is certainly not necessarily right for another. <G> Pam Reply-To: <sproutpeople > Date: Fri, 30 Mar 2012 17:01:59 -0000 To: <sproutpeople > Subject: Re: I have a question about oil!! > > > > > > good morning.....personally, i think that we can create alot of difficulties > for ourselves by getting our medical advice from the internet or tv > shows.....there certainly is a great deal of good information out there ( as > well as bad ) but on the internet people can say absolutely anything whether > it is factual or not or is applicable to an individual's situation > > coconut oil is grand stuff but it contains 12 grams of saturated fat per > tablespoon.....when someone says that something is better than something else, > i think that one needs to take that with a grain of salt.....most stuff > presented now is just a matter of a person's personal opinion too.....i think > that you're smart, carolyn, to do some research of your own when you hear some > new information > > i use canola oil or olive oil for baking and in some salad dressings because > those are the two oils that were recommended for us by the heart doctor but i > did a good deal of reading about both of them ( and other stuff ) myself too > > if you want to do some interesting researching, do some reading about > salts.....i read that grey celtic sea salt is approximately 13% lower in > sodium than other sea salts and havn't found information to the contrary > yet.....maybe it's true.....i find learning about things like this to be > interesting too.....have a great day.....peace, mary > > >>>>>>>>>>>> > > >>>>> > >> > >>>>>>>>>>>> > > >>>>> > >> > I'm so sorry. Guest guest
I copied and pasted some info on neem and how to use it.... you can get 35 pounds of neem seed oil for 185 dollars...or 2 pounds for 12 bucks... shipping not included at camdengrey.com they're in in miami if you want to pick it up... shipping it might be expensive.... They have many nice products there reasonably priced...  Neem This is a thick, dark colored oil. Neem Seed Oil, Azadirachta indica. The neem seed kernel is very rich in fatty acids, often up to 50 % of the kernel's weight. Neem seed oil is very bitter with a garlic/sulfur smell; it contains vitamin E and other essential amino acids. Neem oil is an excellent moisturizing oil that contains compounds with historical and scientific validity as medicinals. Neem is also known as Nimba, Margosa or Indian Tulip Tree Oil, which is a traditional treatment for severely damaged skin. Neem seed oil is not an essential oil. Our Neem oil is cold pressed, no solvents are used in its processing and its origin is from India. The concentrated essential fatty acids help to restore moisture and elasticity to the skin while it disinfects and heals. Apply sparingly several times a day to affected areas. You may also add 20 to 25 drops of Neem Oil to 8 ounces of your favorite shampoo, massage oil or lotion. As a natural pesticide: Using neem derivatives for managing pests is a non-violent approach to controlling pests. Neem products work by intervening at several stages of the insect's life. They may not kill the pest instantaneously but incapacitate it in several ways. Neem very subtly employs effects such as repellence, feeding and ovipositional deterrence, growth inhibition, mating disruption, chemo-sterilization, etc.. Extracts from neem have shown incredible success with not only battling fungus problems but also many forms of root rot. Neem biodegrades in a matter of weeks when exposed to the sunlight. Pure Neem oil will retain its potency much longer if stored in a cool place away from strong light. Here are some tips on using Neem oil: (1) Dont mix any more than you need. (2) Add water and a little soap to the plant before spraying. (3) Spray the complete plant including the potting media. (4) Mix 1 oz. in 1 gallon of water. A weaker solution may be used for maintenance. INCI: Azadirachta indica.   Subject: Re: I have a question about oil!!
