Guest guest
Hi Lance.....What they did on me at the hospital is called chest percussion.......its the only time I've ever had it done and was kinda suprised that they were going to order a machine for me at home......its like a hand held massager and it literally vibrates the back.......and loosens up all the phlem.......they did it like every 4 hours on me at the hospital but I won't have to do it that often at home.......I don't know where you would obtain one other than seeing if your dr perhaps knows anything about it.....ask him if he knows anything about percussion therapy instruments......and see if they can obtain one for you......they are very expensive....I don't know the exact amount as my insurance covered mine completley....but the dr did say they were very high.......I will say I have a flutter valve too though and it really does a good job......I wish you lots of luck in getting something that will help your wife........... Guest guest
Sondra & Lance- Sondra - I too have the vibromatic thru my insurance but the supplier told my husband it was $7__.00 cannot remember exactly but a little over $700. How long do you use it at a time? Also, do you do postural drainage at the same time? A friend whom we recently saw at a 50 year class reunion is a lung specialist and we talked for some time. One thing he suggested I do was to use 15 minutes of steam inhalation prior to postural drainage and clapping or vibrating. The postural drainage he said to do on the bed (not the floor) and pile pillows at one end to raise a piece of plywood which I cover with a large afghan. I have been doing this since we returned home and it works great. He also suggested I talk with my Dr. about using Arbuterol or Maxair (sp) instead of the Serevent which take 2 hrs to kick in and is a 12 hour treatment medication. Then use the Arbuterol or Maxair (sp) 1 puff - 15 min of steam - 1 puff and then postural drainage with the clapping/vibromatic. I am to see my Dr. the 15th and will discuss this with her. I have mastered using the vibromatic myself in the morning and then my hubby does it in the evening or does the clapping. I want to keep as much out as I can. Y'all might ask your Drs. for their opinions of the above. Would be interested in that opinion too. Lance I wish you all the luck in finding help for your wife. Nona star34baby@... Guest guest
Sondra - How does the nebulizer work - what is the procedure and what is its purpose? Nona
Guest guest
Nona....The nebulizer is a breathing machine that they usually use for astha patients.....you put medicine into it and then plug it up and turn it on and put the mouth piece up to your mouth and breathe the medicine in.......it usually takes about 10 minutes but right now it is saving my life....lol sometimes I get so short of breath but after I do a treatment I'm up and running again...... Guest guest
Sondra Coughing can cause a lot of pressure on the tiny blood vessels, occasionally causing them to burst. In general it is not cause for concern. However if you get an excessive amount of fresh blood in your sputem then contact your doctor, Of course a little blood mixed with sputem and mucous can appear to be alarming when really it is nothing. Guest guest
Hi Sondra, My membrane is quite thin & breaks easily. Before all of this started - going back about 15 years - I was rushing into the house in winter from a hot car, really cold and coughed and there it was. Scared me to death. Next time was cold again & I went from hot house to cold air. Saw Eye/Ear/Nose Dr. said I needed to drink more water - I was very dry. Eventually had a Bronchoscopy (sp) found nothing but did say the membranes very thin. This some when I had Bronchitis, coughing hard, bleeding started. Lasted 3 days (usually stopped next day) & I asked Dr. in ER how he was going to stop the bleeding. He said when the infection began to clear up the there would be no more bleeding. He was right. This last time I went on antibiotic because mucus was really changing color & could not talk to Dr. for 3 days so started the meds. I also had pink streaks in the mucus - never got bright red and bleeding a lot though this time. That's my story hope it helps some. <<<hugs>>> Nona star34baby@... Guest guest
Your doctor will ask you to describe the blood. Is it brown or bright red? How much-like the tip of a pencil, dime-size, quarter-size, etc.? A little probably isn't a concern but should be reported to your doctor when you visit. A lot is worth a phone call before your appointment. When my little turned into a lot last year, it prompted tests and a 3rd opinion. Barb (no subject) << File: ATT00005.htm >> I have a question......and it may seem stupid but why is it that we will cough up blood once in awhile???? I haven't really had a problem with this but have noticed it in my sputum a little more often and had some again this morning......I will be sure to ask my doc about it....I was just wondering if anyone knew what causes this.........thanks...... sondra

Guest guest
Agreed. no more personal emails. Can we all try to be more conscious when we write to each other? I know how easy it is to just answer quickly, but maybe if we each took just a bit of time with this, we wouldn't all be so burdened with these particualt emails.
