Honestly, what ever I want. Although, I have gotten much better

lately about not eating chocolate and cutting back on the sugar. And

I'm still not doing any formal exercising but I do walk a lot at

school. Of course, the bathroom issues are there but mostly at night

and directly related to what I eat. Other than that, I'm good. I'm

getting braces on Tuesday. Can you believe it? You look great, I saw

your new pic!

Hang in there sister!

Rabecca—beautifully stated. I was going to

reply, but after I read your post I realized that you said exactly what I would

have.

, I hope Rabecca answered your

questions. I want to add to number 3 though—yes, suicidal

thoughts are typically associated with the disorder, more so with teens and

young adults. I urge you to speak to an adult if you are having these

thoughts. I, too, am here if you want to talk.

,

Welcome to the group!!! Lets see if I can help

answer some of your

questions...

1. Some kids have odors that really seem to bother

either them or

others, whether or not they have aspergers. I

think those with AS and

have smell-sensory issues are probably bothered by

them more than the

general population. I have an NT daughter that has

to smell each bite

before she eats it and every little smell bothers

her, so even NTs

can have smell sensitivities. My AS son does tend

to smell a bit

musty, but it isn't something that particularly

bothers him. Now if

he comes up to someone else that smells the same

way, it is a

different story! ~winks~ He also is a 1-2X per day

showerer and has

good hygene. His doctor thinks it has to do with

hormones at this

stage. What has your doctor said? Does he/she

think it is an issue,

or is it something you are just going to have to

deal with???

2. Boy is this ever a loaded question. I have had

trouble with this

one my entire life... but hmmmm... I think I am

getting better at

it... It takes a long LONG time to figure out who

you might want to

hang around with and how to do it outside of

school. It is as if the

entire world disappears once a scheduled activity

is over (like

school). What you may want to find is a scheduled

activity that you

don't mind or even like that you think you can

make a several year

commitment to. This way, you are seeing the same

people on a regular

basis over a long period of time. This helps you

get to know one

another without having to be too forward or

appearing desperate. It

also helps them lower their guards so that you can

hear what they are

doing after the activity and where. Often times,

after quite a while

has passed (over a year) you may begin being

invited along on these

excursions. You may even think about inviting

certain people who are

involved in the activity to go get ice

cream/snacks/lunch etc after

the activity or during a break. During the

activities, often times

other subjects come up about other interests

different kids have.

Listen in. You may be suprised how many have some

of the same

interests you have and you can schedule times to

get together to do

the activities (play video games, card games, go

swimming, movies,

etc) This also takes time, as you don't want to

scare anyone off by

jumping onto a topic full force before they know

you... They may see

you as a threat or a " cling-on " if you

don't talk about it for a

couple times before inviting others to participate

in an activity.

Most people, AS or NT, have trouble with the after

school get

together stuff unless it is scheduled. Putting

things on the calendar

so that you don't forget, scheduling activities

with others your same

age, and being involved in groups that meet on a

regular basis all

help establish out of school relationships!!!

3. Depression is quite common in kids with AS,

though not all kids

with it. Some even have manic deression or bipolar

disorder, which

can make the depression seem far worse than the

typical symptoms.

Suicidal thoughts often occur in kids that have

untreated or

undertreated depression. It also occurs when a

teen with AS does not

feel accepted as they are and when he or she feels

she isn't

recieving enough support or help to cope with the

world around them.

It can be a visious cycle, one of depression,

suicidal thoughts, and

periods of anger... If you find that you are

experiencing depression,

thoughts of suicide, or emotional turmoil, you are

not alone... but

on the flip side, you need to speek up and get

help. Your doctor,

school counselor, parents, or support people are

all in positions

where they can get you the help you need.

Depression, emotional

rollercoasters, and suicidal thoughts don't

usually go away on their

own, especially for teens with AS. It isn't

something you can control

or that you can " fix " . It is something

that is beyond what one person

can do alone... and it isn't your fault... You

didn't choose to have

these thoughts/feelings... They happen, often due

to a brain or

chemical imbalance... It is often biological but

can be triggered or

exaserbated by experiences... You can get through

this... but please

tell someone in your life if you are having these

thoughts!!!

If you want to talk, we are here!!!

~hugs~
