Joni,

We were told that should wear her helmet 23 hours a day and we

tried to adhere to that as closely as possible. We did not take the

helmet off in public unless we were going to be outdoors where it

would be hot. Of course, we always took it off if she had a fever.

Sometimes I had to take a deep breath and remind myself why I was

doing it and plunge ahead. It wasn't always easy at first, but it did

get easier as time went on.

Joni,

We took A.J.'s helmet off for his baptism, and one time in the mall

when I didn't feel like dealing with stares. So twice since

January 2,2003. Just today a woman stopped me whose daughter was in a

helmet for cranio. We had a very nice discussion. Also, today at

lunch, a curious man continued to stare at us during our entire meal.

You take the good with the bad. It goes both ways :) If it is the

stares that are bothering you just pretend you are famous and the

popperatzi (sp?) and fans cannot get enough of you and your adorable

baby.

No, we never take it off in public.

The two days I told everyone who I ran into what it was for. I felt

like I needed to explain. Now, I don't even remember she has it on.

Some people ask about it. Most people talk to like it isn't

even there. We get a few looks but overall most people act like it

is no big deal.

If you decorate the helmet it doesn't look so Medical and if gives

people somethink to talk about if they are curious about the helmet.

Take care,

Hi Joni:

It is important to keep the helmet on the baby for the recommended

time of 23 hrs a day. This will assure you get the most and fastest

correction while in the helmet.

I rarely took Abby's band off while in public. Yes we got stares, but

as I've said many times, it's human nature for people to stare at

something " different " . The stares really didn't bother me, I would've

probably stared at a banded baby too if I didn't know what it was for.

Do you know what type of helmet has? A STARband or a locally

made helmet? (Is it a full helmet or open top?)

Hi Debbie,

The orthotic is a full helmet with a small opening cut out of the top...locally made. Thanks for your advice for public wearing. I will just deal with the staring...it is true..I would probably do the same thing if I saw a helmeted kiddo. Thanks, Joni

Hi there, I do, I take it off, I let him wear it to the store then in

the car I take it off then run in do my shopping and put it back on in

the car-this works for me, I try to keep in on about 22-22 1/2 hours a

day-I strive for 23 but I will take it off for the times I have to go

out-it is easier for me overall and that makes counts for something to

me cuz this is not easy.! It is important to keep it on all the time

and that is why the days I don;t go out I keep it on, so it sorta

allows me a little bit of room-I do hurry but I do take it off-what

ever your comfortable with will make the whole process more

successful-

Joni,

First I wanted to extend my welcome to you! You've found a great

group with a wonderful support system!

I have to say that I never had a problem with my twins in their

bands. The first day was rough, and yes I did cry, but I knew I was

doing what was best for them, so being out in public didn't bother

me. That being said, my hubby had an extrememly hard time getting

acclimated to the bands. So much so, that if we were ALL going out

somewhere, he would ask that we leave the bands home. Thankfully we

didn't go out alot (hardly ever!), so I was able to rationalize to

myself that losing a few hours here or there was better than having

my husband miserable. And in his defense, its not like he was just

being petty, in his own little way he was trying to protect the twins

from the stares and comments, not like they would have known the

difference though!

Just remember though, the longer you keep the helmet on...the quicker

it can come off!!

Joni, I kept 's Band on 23 hours daily, unless she was running a

fever or had red spots waiting for an adjustment. I wanted all the

correction she could get. In public was not a big deal for me as I

just really didn't care what ppl though of it. JMO

I have Makenna in her helmet probably 20-22 hours day. I take it off

in public occasionally if I think it may be too hot for her (like at

the park) or at a restaurant so it doesn't get messy, or just because

I am not in the mood for the stares or comments at that particular

time..

Btw: Portland is gorgeous. My mom lives in Dundee.
