Guest guest
I'm wondering whether we need to consider a low dose SSRI for my 5 yo daughter. We follow the DAN protocol and are chelating using TD-DMPS. She is bright but very avoidant, whereas other kids I know on the spectrum who are her age and have similar cognitive skills are beginning to make a few socail gains -- showing some remedial interest in peers and developing a little social motivation, etc. I know all kids are different, but the professionals working with her had hoped to see more progress in this area by now. A friend recently told me about another kid with similar issues who made a lot of progress after beginning an SSRI regimen. There is a family history of depression among adults on my side; additionally, my daughter goes through a tough down cycle in the winter that I think may be seasonal affective disorder. We have had her on 5HTP since the early spring and it seems to have helped some. I'm wondering if SSRIs might be helpful, but I don't take lightly the idea of putting a 5 year old on psychotropic medications. I was hoping to get some input from people who have either tried SSRIs, or have gone the 'natural' route with 5HTP, or both. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
