Guest guest
Hi , This is Sponagle from New Brunswick. I understand your struggle. We were fortunate enough to find a locally made helmet. A Neurosurgeon in our area started treating plagio with an orthotic approach a year or so ago. Plagio treatment centres in Canada are few and far between. The known treatment centres are in Alberta, Ontario, New Brunswick and just recently I heard of an independant in BC. The Ontario locations are CHEO, Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario and Sick Kids in Toronto. I would also check with your local Orthotist in London, Orthotics of London,Ontario, Hamilton Road 519- 432-2041, ask to speak with their certified orthotist. Hopefully he/she could steer you in the direction of a plagio-friendly doctor in your area. I hope this helps. Hope the CT goes well...... Keep us posted. Anything else you need. Just ask. Making the decision to band a child is a difficult one. I just wish it was atleast on the table for every parent... Sponagle --- In Plagiocephaly , " Tracey M. Guest guest
Hi Tracey I am in Canada too, and in my research on plagio, I have found that Canada seems to be miles behind the US. I have seen 4 doctors (2 of those ped's) and all told me the " round out on its own story " . It has rounded out a bit, but not alot. Well, I finally demanded to see a neurosurgeon (and you know what wait lists are like here....I don't get in until the end of april) and the orthotist that I spoke to recommended the helmet. We have decided to give it a try and see what happens. You will find a few Canadians on this board (I am in BC), and Mr. Plagio (Sponagle) is a wealth of info. Good luck and keep us posted! , mom to Ethan --- In Plagiocephaly , " Tracey M. Guest guest
Hi Tracey and welcome. I'm not in Canada so I cannot give you any specific information. I see that you have already received a couple of good responses from two of our Canadian members so that is good. I'm glad that Emma is scheduled for a follow up CT scan to double check for cranio. Unfortunately surgery is usually the solution for craniosynostosis so all fingers crossed that it will turn out to be plagio and not cranio. Hopefully you will be able to explore some of the options that Spongale (lovingly named Mr. Plagio) gave you. If you could find a band or helmet maker in your area then you might want to seriously pursue that option if it is indeed plagio. Best wishes to you. Please do let us know how the CT goes and what the results are. Glad to have you with us. Marci (Mom to ) Oklahoma --- In Plagiocephaly , " Tracey M. Guest guest
Hello, this is a long time after this post but I have a 2 1/2 year old and live in Mississauga, ON. We also had crappy advice and were not recommended to helmet therapy and now she has facial assymetry. particularly one eye which is set back in her head compared to the other. just wondered if you ended up needing surgery for your child and who you went to see. I went to sick kids and was told nothing could be done. i am considering taking her to the US but it will cost an arm and a leg and just want to know if there's anyone in Canada you know of. thanks, deepa > > My daughter has been seeing a neurosurgeon in London, Ontario > > Children's Hospital since November last year.
