Guest guest
First, I have to say that using DMSO is not without some SERIOUS hazard and consideration should be CAREFULLY given to other ways of using a similar compound without going this route. DMSO has some distinctive hazards and you should do thorough research and talk to your doctor before using this stuff. DMSO is a solvent produced in wood pulping/paper manufacture. It can inadvertently " redecorate " your carpet and clothing by mere contact... The lovely garlicky smell to your sweat and pervading from your breath are the least hazardous side effects you can invoke! Apparently there are two parts of DMSO - DMS and the MSM. MSM is the one useful to the athlete and that has been separated out into a cream/gel prep you can get and oral intake. Mel introduced me to MSM for a broken blood vessel in my palm that kept recurring and was a very painful and limiting injury. I took 1-5 grams a day of capsule MSM and this along with a gram of vitamin C appeared to help relieve the pain sooner on the recurrence and heal the injury better than ice and rest. MSM also seems to help recovery post competition for me. It is also often sold in tandem with glucosamine sulfate and again, that seems to have some positive effect on recovery. N=1 of course. <grin>. If you choose oral ingestion of MSM, be aware it's a sulfur derivative and this can be of consequence on digestion, and you can get some upsets if you don't step up on the intake gradually. Obviously topical applications do not have this limitation... my preferred use of MSM is now a roller I get t hat has good effect, it also contains ilex and this seems to both heat and sooth the muscles when applied. Safe also for the drug tested athlete. DMSO is somewhat available at certain health food stores in various liquid concentrations. Some have a rather " under the counter " sort of approach, you have to ask for it, it's not on the shelves... You should be very aware that it tends to carry things into the body through the skin - you have to wash your skin thoroughly and rinse it very well first - and you should use extreme caution in your application... DMSO does come in a " roller " also. Lifters I have spoken to who have used it have applied it to the area, then put on plastic wrap - and taped it over the area to ensure no migration of the DMSO and no other things get on the skin surface. You should also use unpowdered gloves when applying it or put sandwich bags over your hands. The application of a ground up aspirin is one I have heard of, but it was plain, white, aspirin with nothing else in it. Haven't tried it myself, I did consider DMSO at one point and reconsidered after thorough research. The liquid advil (brandname) ibuprofen which you mention has other additives in it...I would think it's possible you'd inadvertently get the color in there using DMSO! Anecdotally from the PL who I have talked to who did use DMSO, there is a problem that you " feel better " sooner and you tend to overuse the muscle again before it's ready. That is, the rate of healing " feels deceptively faster than it actually is " . Care should be taken not to overuse/retear the area under treatment for this reason. All this being said, I saw one individual actually put it on a knee, put plastic wrap on, and then apply his knee wraps...and I would not recommend this. All this being said, I personally would not suggest you try a liquid ibuprofen capsule and DMSO together. The Phantom aka Schaefer, CMT, CSCS, competing powerlifter Denver, Colorado, USA -------------- Original message -------------- Back in the day, Powerlifters used to make a concoction of powdered aspirin and DMSO and apply it liberally to " the affected area " . DMSO Became legendary and one used to have to know a Veterinarian to get it (In the 80's, in Vermont anyway) Leaping ahead a couple of decades and now being 50, I have a bicep tendon/anterior delt issue and a meet Sept 13th. I am toying with the idea of cracking open some Advil Liqui-gel's and mixing them with DMSO and dousing " The Affectred Area " Anyone have any thoughts on this little remedy? I am getting A.R.T. Laser Therapy through a PT and M.A.T. (Muscle Activation Technique) Any and all help/advice would be most welcome Robbie Stark town N.Y. Guest guest
Although ART and MAT are great and I use them often, I've found that Graston(grastontechnique.com) works very well for your type of condition, if I understand it correctly(i.e. tendonopathy/microtrauma). Just a thought. s Kansas City USA =========================================== Subject: DMSO/Advil?
