Think I'd get me a window AC unit.  Down here they have them for $100 and

up.   Think I saw one for $88 advertised but don't think I'd want one of

those.  Maybe it does use more electricity but I can't handle the heat.  It is

about 90 now here and up a little but not over 101 and I don't do that.  I was

going to the pool to exercise today and my husband said, " It is really hot out

there. "   It was about 91.  I took a shower and decided not to go.  That was

about 5 or 5:30 pm.  We settled down to have dinner and watching Westerns.

Subject: Hi everybody. How's the sprouting going?

Because it's going to be 110 tomorrow here in Brooklyn, I decided to only have 3

10 x 20 trays of greens going. I have pea shoots and sunnies and that's it. Till

the summer is over.

But my sprouts are doing FABULOUS in their sprout cooler. That is the single

most bestest (is that a word??) idea I have ever had.

They are cool, they grow all day long, and 12 hours later, they are still cool

and no mold.

It reaches 90 in my apartment, even with the fans going. So I have to protect my

sprouts. How funny, Melody doesn't have A/C in the kitchen areas but her sprouts

have their own cooler!!!

lol

Sometimes we have to make do with what we have. I don't cook anything in this

weather so I rarely go into the kitchen, and my living room is 30 feet long

(when we moved here 21 years ago), we were so impressed by the size of this

apartment and how COOL it stayed, we never needed to have any A/C except for the

bedroom. We have never had this kind of heat before. We'd need to put a 50

thousand BTU air conditioner in the living room and my electric bills for the

month would be OVER $300. I know this for a fact because my electric company

told me what my bill would be. My friend around the corner has the same size

apartment as me and her bills are through the roof. But she weighs over 300 lbs

and she can't stand to be in the heat. So all their money goes toward the

electric bill. And once I was questioning my electric bill and I had a Con Ed

rep on the phone and I said " I don't have A/C, why is my bill $90 and he said

" Oh, I know you don't have A/C " and I said 'how do you know? " and he said " Are

you serious, do you know how high your bills would be during the summer " .

That's when I realized what people actually pay in Brooklyn when they have A/C

in most of the rooms. I'm happy just to be able to sleep with it.

When the weather is NOT in heat wave mode, we get nice breezes (I have 8

windoews in my living room alone. If you ask me NOW if I would live in this

apartment, I'd say " are you nuts? it's too big and too hard to keep up) but who

knew this 21 years ago. There were 3 of us back then and Alan and I both worked.

But times change, economies change, I grow my own food (thank god) and we have

these gigantic fans (which I replaced one the other day and it was on sale for

$19.99) and it's HUGE. Called Artic Wind. We have it by the computer and you

would never know it's above 90 outside. We close the verticals and keep the room

nice and dark and no sun gets in and we get by.

We have to. We are all that we have. And I love when I hear people complain

about the HEAT, and they have central a/c and a pool in the backyard and they

say " Oh, I'm dying in this heat " . I think people should say they are dying,

when they are actually dying. Not when they live in central air conditioning,

have a full pool in the backyard, have a sun deck with cool umbrellas, have more

money than god, and yet they complain.

They should stop and smell the roses because god forbid we have a blackout, we

will have a level playing field. I am like MacGuyver. I have cooling systems, I

have ice chests, I have a cooler where I keep my fresh produce and drinks so I

don't have to constantly open and close my fridge. I had a friend ask me 'Why do

you need to open and close your fridge to get a drink? "

I then said " Oh you have one of those gigantic refrigerators with the ice, and

water on the OUTSIDE of the fridge? " She said " Of course, don't you? "

She lives in another state. I replied 'Not only do I not have one of those

fridges, I have never had a dishwasher, clothes washer, food disposal thing in

my sink, hot water dispenser on the side of my sink "

She then said " you wash your own dishes, you DON'T have a dishwasher? "

I burst out laughing.

Not everybody has these luxuries. Sure, it would be nice to have them but if one

doesn't have them, one has to learn to live with what one DOES have. I have a

roof over my head, (a pretty nice roof by the way), I am able to be self

sustaining, I have my sprouts, and I've controlled my diabetes.

That's better than any luxury. You can have all the luxuries in the world but if

your body is not up to par, if you are not eating non-processed food, if you

have toxic stuff going on in your body, who the heck needs luxuries?

I guess it's what we have been used to. I like the heat because it helps my

arthritis. My body is loose, I can move much better than if I'm in A/C. I

remember when we were in NYC at one of our Neuropathy Support group meetings

about 2 weeks ago. OMG, they had the A/C so high we wore coats during the

meeting. I knew to bring a jacket and Alan thought I was nuts. Believe me, I

WASN'T NUTS!!

This extreme weather is dangerous. And today it might hit 110. I've never had

that happen.

But I adapt. I've learned to do this.

So stay as cool as you can.

Melody

P.S. Sorry for the long post!! lol

Hi China:

Welcome to sprouting. What kind of sprouters are you using. I use the

Sproutgarden system (round green trays). I am going to show you one of my videos

so you can see how I keep my sprouts nice and cool and you can see how they

grow. I don't have any a/c in my kitchen or living room but we make out just

fine.

I built this out of two large styrofoam containers (the kind they ship frozen

steaks in and other frozen stuff to people's homes).

I use cold packs also.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQNxyONz7Uc

My house might get warm but my sprouts are thriving just fine.

As for the broccoli, I tried sprouting them by themselves but I have much better

results when I combine them with other brassicas. They just grow better (for me

anyway).

And I've rarely lost a sprout due to mold. Even in hot weather.

They grow by creating their own heat, but they don't like to be grown in a hot

environment. They need plenty of air circulating around them.

So take a look at this video (and this will link to my other sprouting videos)

let me know what you think.

Dona, I have a question about using the round green Sproutgarden trays to do pea

shoots.

I assume you cut the baby blanket to fit the round tray and then you put the

soaked peas right? Do you then stack the trays on each other or not?

I'd love to hear how you do pea shoots in the sprout garden. Even better, TAKE

PICS!!!

Hey Melody;

I'm using a sprout mason jar with the mesh lid. My first batch came out

good, its was a mix. I threw out the broccoli sprouts, it had a strong

smell. I started a new batch yesterday and combined it with clover and

radish. So far good. I think I'm rinsing too much and not allowing

enough drainage because first mixed batch always seemed wet but with

trial and error I'll get the hang of it. The first batch has been in a

jar in the fridge since Friday and they're still good. Also I moved the

batch from yesterday to the dish drainer and took the towel off. Some

one told to me cover them and I wasn't sure how how but today is the 1st

day and their uncovered.

I did see the video and they look beautiful!

Hi China:

You sound like me when I first started sprouting. I used mason jars, mesh lids,

etc. I also used salad strainers. It was cool. I rinsed twice a day, spreading

them out with my fingers. I found a big cover to keep them in the dark and in 4

or so days, I took the cover off, put them in indirect sunlight and they greened

up.

You'll find there are loads of fun ways to do your sprouts. What I did when I

wanted to get ALL the excess water out of the mason jar was to get as much water

out as I could, then I twirled the mason jar in the air over the sink, shaking

all the excess out of it.

Honestly, if you find you really like sprouting, get the Sproutgarden. So

simple, so compact, they stack and it's EASY!!!

And I learn new sprouting stuff all the time. I found out something today and

I'm going to do a post on it.

Sproutingly yours,

Melody

Melody

I don't have anything sensitive on my tablet. I only go to my forums. I will do

NO banking business or any purchases.

And I do know the person who is letting me use her wi fi. She lives upstairs and

I've known her for 17 years.

So that part is fine. I will eventually get my own router but right now I'm just

learning.

Never thought I could do this at my age. It's surprising when we learn that we

can do ANYTHING!!!

lol, Melody

> Just be aware that when you use someone else's wifi and it is unsecured, that

it provides a means for others to get into your personal information that you

haveon your tablet.   I do sometimes do that but have had problems once when I

did.  On your own wifi, that is different so long as you have a good

password.  Just be aware of that.  Would be better if you knew whose you were

using and got an okay but only if they gave you a password and they kept it

secure.  Do you know someone whose wifi you are picking up?  See if they will

let you use it or pay $5-10 a month for use.  You can use wifi at hotels and

Panera Bread, some Mc's, libraries, etc.  but with the same risk.  I

have gone to Panera's in Michigan as can not get a phone line there as it is

long distance.  Same in Arkansas.  I can get out on my iphone through the AT & T

network which is direct.  i don't know if there is any risk there or not.

> Just talked to a woman where someone somehow hacked into her computer and snt

ot things, including a directive to her investment company to transfer a bunch

of money to a foreign account (they contacted her to see if it was legitimate)

and sent info to her contacts and then deleted her contacts.  I saw the message

on Facebook. My iphone doesn'twork to well on Facebook. I have a G3.  My

husband has a Kindle Fire and can do email on that as well as have books on

it.  We have our scriptures on my iphone and on hi Kindle.  Nice we don't have

to carry heavy books to church as we are too old to carry heavy stuff.  Do have

to wear glasses to see the words.

> Good luck with your tablet.  It will be handy when you travel.  Can keep in

touch.  Never use a debit card on line for purchases, only use credit card.

Can then cancel it and with debit they take it out of your account and you have

to wait a long time to manage to get it back. My acquaintance has no clue how

someone got into her computer from outside.

know how hard it is to learn Tablet Technology when you ONLY know computers and

using a mouse. I don't own a smart phone, I don't text. I just have a nice

computer, a nice keyboard and a mouse and I do just fine. But our future will be

all wi fi so I know I have to learn it. Well, I got such a headache from trying

to learn to do Tablets that I walked over to my sprout garden, looked at all the

green stuff growing and just smiled.
