What a great story! My son has come up with some of the most humorous and

sometimes touching quips, quotes and stories, too. You know, you are such a

charismatic writer, that if you could ever find the time, writing a book

about things just like these, would offer us a little light and laughter,

not to mention insight, into what truely remarkable children we have.

I really appreciate your postings!!

Happy days

I just wanted to start a thread about the little things our kids do

that bring smiles to our faces. Whatever it is I would like to hear

about it.

I used to take the little things for granted, my older daughter is

NT and a social butterfly (very unlike me or my husband, we're not

sure where those traits came from!), she has never had any problems

and developed like every average kid.

Every time achieves something that he struggled with I can't

help but have mixed feelings, joy and sadness. Anyway here is my

smile for the day…..

never had a sense of humor. This is a big part of our house and

one way we cope, whether it's silly, dry or even gallows humor we

try to find the funny in everything.

We tease each other but were never able to do that with and

anytime we tried it was a cause of anger and frustration. Finally,

discovered humor. I am not sure what happened but something

clicked and he saw the light.

This happened a couple of years ago, not too long after 9/11. There

was a joke going around school that he told me. He laughed like

crazy when he told me and I laughed too but then he looked at me and

said he did not understand why it was funny. I explained it to him

and at that moment he started to " get it " .

Here is the joke: Do you know why the little old lady with knitting

needles was kicked off the airplane? Because she was knitting an

afghan.

knew that an Afghan was a person from Afghanistan but did not

know that an afghan was also a knitted blanket. Once he finally

realized that things can have more than one meaning and that these

meanings can be related but not necessarily the same he was

delighted. I think that he just finally got old enough to put the

ideas together. What a wonderful day. I spent a long time that day

dredging up old jokes for him; it was great to see those wheels

turning.

My favorite times with my son is when he tells knock knock jokes. My son is

5 and you can imagine the jokes that he tells. Needless to say whether they

make sense or not I still laugh at all of them.

His latest one is Knock Knock, who's there, cargo, cargo who, car goes beep

beep. So of course both of us just crack up laughing. So it puts a smile

on my face when he tries. He might not get it right all the time but hey

he's trying.

Thank you Leah, I appreciate the compliment. My husband keeps urging

me to write a book about our son but I never really took the notion

seriously. Besides family I also have a full time job.

I am home today, we had a bad med day yesterday and no one got any

sleep last night. Thankfully I have a wonderful, understanding boss.

never said anything except baa baa before he turned two. (That

was his name for his bottle). I knew that he had some kind of

problem but even without language I knew he was smart. Shortly after

his second birthday he started speaking in complete sentences. It

was kinda surreal, first nothing and then everything. My mom used to

say that he was just getting it all straight in his head before

trying it.

I used to read to him and point out the pictures but he had NO

interest in the stories, the only thing he cared about was the

number on the bottom of the page. He would get mad and slap my hands

if I pointed at pictures and did not point to the numbers.

Eventually I gave up on the picture books and started " reading " to

him from my dictionary; it was the only book I had on hand that

contained enough new numbers. His first obsession.

When he was 2 ½ he could count to 200 with no problem. This was a

game we used if we had to travel more than 15 minutes. Sometime

later, when he was closer to three he asked what the " last " number

was. I was surprised that he asked that question, it seemed way

beyond his comprehension. I told him that numbers never end, that

there is always one more and that this was called infinity. The look

on his face was priceless; he had such an obsession for numbers that

for him the thought of numbers never ending was better than Santa

Claus!

My funny about my 5 y/o AS son goes like this. 's " favorite topic " is

monsters. He loves the old black and white Universal Studios monster

movies...enstein, Dracula, Wolfman, etc. Before Christmas last year

he was getting his hair cut. The hairdresser asked him " , what do you

want Santa to bring you for Christmas? " I knew what his answer would be and

had to stifle a laugh when he replied " I want a coffin for Christmas " . You

see, pretending to be Dracula in his coffin by lying under the dining room

table just wasn't cutting it anymore, so he wanted the real thing to

recreate his favorite scene in Abbott and Costello Meet enstein. I

love those moments.

Sherry,

That's hilarious. I am sure that would have thought the same

way and cried too! He also hates the toilet and still doesn't like

to touch it or flush it and he is now 14!. We had a battle royal to

get him to pick up the toilet seat to pee and put it back down when

done. He uses his foot most of the time. I can always tell when he

is done peeing cause the seat CRASHES down! LOL
