2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans

The Federal Government has issued its first-ever Physical Activity Guidelines

for Americans. They describe the types and amounts of physical activity that

offer substantial health benefits to Americans.

This is a good start. Hopefully in the future they'll enhance it with some more

guidelines. A few things come to mind:

•Stop sitting in your car at the drive-thru burger and fried chicken joints. Get

up, prepare some real food, and eat it.

•It's OK if physical activities are fun. Exertion-oriented guideline don't

convey the idea of skill-based exercise. I don't know if the fitness equipment

industry lobbies Washington, but they'd probably come out of the woodwork to

oppose this.

•Wouldn't this be a stunning announcement: " We've added running and jumping

mechanics to our national standards for physical education. " These movements

comprise the essential language of movement athletes need to become fluent in,

but they aren't being taught in our schools. The assumption seems to be that

they're innate and don't need to be addressed; but the reality is that theymust

be acquired (just like English or any other language).

I know, I sound like I'm trying to start the revolution...
