I disagree here with not providing a reason or stating " conflicting

obligations " as a reason. I'd be bluntly honest and tell them that

you don't feel safe. I believe that this is a perfectly valid reason

for leaving a job. The employer has a legal obligation to protect

employees from hazards (see 29 CFR). As others have stated here, YOU

also have an obligation to protect yourself. I'd write a letter of

resignation, stating that other business in the area have been robbed

recently and that the shift you are required to work puts you at risk.

I might mention something complimentary about the company, your

supervisor, co-workers or something, thank them for the opportunity,

but this is a decision you have made for your own safety. blah blah

blah When asked why you left your last job, give a compound answer.

State that while you loved your job, supervisor and coworkers and got

along well with everyone, the neighborhood had recently gone downhill

and because you were required to work alone at night that you no

longer felt safe. If another employer has a problem with that, you

probably don't want to work for them.
