"If one is treated for syphilis, how do you know if it is cured... A friend was treated for syphilis when going for his green card 1 yr ago,. Now going into the military he tested pos again so again they gave him meds.. How do you know whether you are at no further risk.. which exact tests and levels are used/needed thanks.. "Once you have had syphilis, you will have a positive test for that disease for the rest of your life.   The antibodies to syphilis remain in your system, and are not protective against a subsequent infection.  (as an aside, this alone completely negates one of the major talking points of the Duesberg maniacs.)  There are some unresolved questions about syphilis in HIV positive people, but I am assuming given this scenario that your friend is HIV negative.Penicillin  injections are presumed curative, and follow up tests are done to be sure that antibody levels fall. It could be that your friend had a new infection, and showed high levels of antibodies in his blood.  It could be that the military just presumptively treats as positive, and gives shots, which is not unreasonable, as comparing lab tests from site to site is not always reliable.
