Guest guest
Although my daughter's OCD is mostly manageable, when it flares up she really falls apart. Even though it doesn't impact her even daily, it still is producing major problems in terms of the emotional fall-out. Because of this we decided to try medication. We've seem some improvement, but also a lot of side effects. At this point, we've run out of the options that the pediatrician is willing to try and he is reccommending that we involve a psychiatrist for medication management. (She already sees a psychologist for therapy). It's taken a while but we were finally able to locate a child psychiatrist and get an appointment. We (DH and I) wanted to meet with him first to discuss our concerns, see if we thought he'd be a good fit with our family, see if he thinks medication is indeed the way to go, and also get a feel for what he would feel his role would be in her treatment. The psychiatrist refused. He said that he would be willing to meet with us for 10 minutes before seeing her but that was the most we could do. Quite honestly with block scheduling, missing a day of school is really a big deal. Since one of the things she tends to obsess about is perfectionism issues with regard to school work and getting in trouble at school, I really don't want to drag her off to this appointment without " screening " the doctor first. (He was also unwilling to simply talk with me on the phone) I mean, we had a short " interview " with our *pediatrician* while I was still pregnant, and I feel like having a good fit with a *psychiatrist* is a lot more important. At this point, we've decided that his response alone to this request probably means that he wouldn't be the " right " person for us to work with. Are we missing something? Do you guys think that we are being unreasonable? Jeanne jwestpha@... NBCT - Exceptional Needs (2000)
