I second all Eileen said (inc comment to P).Btw if you listen to Bradstreet ARI presentation (April 2011 I think) he mentions that they are running out of options for Strep as has become Very resistant and that the only antibiotic that can still work in most cases is Augmentin. Unfortunately too hard on the body and docs reluctant to use….http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AugmentinFrom: EileenC Reply-To: "Autism-Biomedical-Europe " <Autism-Biomedical-Europe >Date: Fri, 27 Jan 2012 20:48:20 -0000To: "Autism-Biomedical-Europe " <Autism-Biomedical-Europe >Subject: Re: Am I wasting my money at Breakspear - strep titers?

Christianne,

Strep 400. Did your child have accompanying OCD behaviour that had some crossover with the PANDAS symptoms. Can you pinpoint a time when OCD got suddenly worse. Those points, plus strep titres can indicate pandas. It is a clinical diagnosis, the presentation of it varies but is distinct, and a lot of children have strep as a secondary bacterial infection to viruses. The titres can back up diagnosis.

It would have been remiss of the Breakspear not to test if suspected pandas, because if it is untreated it gets worse. 400 is high. Ours were way higher. We have a history of strep titres, and just for example, it took six months of antibiotics every day to get from 1000 (the mid reading) to 200. The Dnase titres take much longer to get down. With some kids I know about with pandas, it takes less time. It depends on the child like everything else. If strep left to go on in its own merry way, the consequences can be tough, we've faced them here and are still dealing with them. Its the most frustrating thing ever.

The yeast is a nightmare, but you can perhaps get something for that on prescription if its really bad. I dosed for yeast at nighttime.ABX in morning. That seems to work.

This is hypothetical, but I don't know when you had the titre taken for 400. I took the titre just into a really bad flare (we've been up and down for years, didn't know viruses were complicated by strep, but that was a good time to take it because we got a result that correlated with the symptoms. When J's off abx the behaviours come back with a vengeance, tics, anxiety and OCD. Within 48 hours. Strep can result in damage to the basal ganglia it is thought, and you cannot get rid of the antibodies which attack yet. They haven't found a way yet. Also there isn't an overall protocol really established yet either. So it is vitally necessary to get it under control.

In my case the test was absolutely necessary and helped me get my child back on track.

Not saying that any of the above is same for you, just giving you another perspective, I hope that helps. You know my email if you want to go into any more depth? Eileen.Chiverton@....

you are entitled to your opinion. This is mine. Glad I did the test and others. Without them my kid would be stuck in the house too anxious to go outside with the curtains shut, lining up anything that could be lined up. We're all different, we all have different opinions. Eventually I was able to go to the NHS and make them pay for his antibiotic. Talk about antibiotic resistance, they brought new meaning to the word, but they gave them because they were needed. But I had the titres, and the research. How hard a fight you'd have for that depends on who you're dealing with.

Natasa posted on here, that for the sake of all of us, we shouldn't be using names, I'd add to that complaining about one of only three real possibilities (leaving aside nutrition which I acknowledge is successful as well) for other parents. So if you feel angry with the Breakspear then take it up with them, it isn't fair on the rest of us who they have helped to wind people up on here.

Don't get the hump with me over this , I haven't got the hump with you over it, but if you have a go at the Breakspear where does that leave the rest of us if they shut down?

I am sorry you have had so much to contend with Christianne, I really am.

Eileen (and )
