Guest guest
Did your friends and family push you to get a diagnosis?? Do you think it is best to let a professional, that isn't in the family, do the pushing for a diagnosis?? I think you for your honest vresponse and I'm deeply sorry for the news you have received. I hope you can remain strong and positive, because most of all your daughter needs an advocate to make sure she is getting the services and support she and her family need. Best of luck to you.. Guest guest
With my second daughter I was mad that several friends/family thought " something was wrong " with Allie and didn't say anything. I was worried for 6 mos but kept thinking I was being paranoid. I didn't pursue assessments until someone said something to me at church. I still thank God that she spoke up. However, with my 3rd daughter I saw the most subtle speech delay. I found myself going back and forth from worrying profusely about her to trying to pretend it all away. I felt myself wanting to be in denial of potential autism. Now that she's 3, she still has a slight language delay and a smattering of behaviors, but we think most of it is learned from big sis. She does have social referencing and has consistently stayed right at the 25% below normal devlopment average for over a year. long story, I can now better understand that the fear, dread, and exhaustion of feeling like I could not go through it again could cause one to live in denial. That said, I think longrun I (for me, anyway) would be thankful for someone pushing me to act. I know that's not the case with some people. My advice would be to talk about the positive treatments for children with autism, talk about kids you've seen who got early, early, early intervention and how we'll they're doing. you could also try talking to only one of the parents that you think might be most receptive. You could also talk about how much fun toddlers have with early intervention stuff to work with kids who do have slight delays. If that's where they're at, that he's " only a little delayed " then try meeting them there and talk about how therapy services are there for kids with " only a slight delay " . Also tell them that they can get free stuff through the early intervention. That was huge for me, I didn't know how on earth I was gonna pay for all of Allie's needs. Once I learned I wouldn't have to, I was much more excited about getting her help. HTH, Debi
Guest guest
Let me tell you, Allie's 6 now, got her dx 2 wks before 2nd bday. I still hope on some level that every time she gets an assessment they'll say, " there's nothing there, she's performing just as she should... " I know going in that won't be the case, but I always feel let down afterward, lol. But I think I'm the " eternal optimist " and am glad I always look for positive things rather than negative. At least that's what I'll keep telling myself, lol. Debi > > Hi > > just got the diagnoses and I am in COMPLETE DENIAL !!!
