Guest guest
Thanks Is there anything different about the tests that Breakspear do? I understand from other posts that these tests are not really conclusive and the only way to find out whether there is a sensitivity is to cut it out of the diet. If that is the case with the Breakspear tests also, we would be inclined not to do them. We don't really suspect gluten intolerance, but just wanted to be sure that it isn't causing problems because his dad has a strong sensitivity to gluten. As to the other tests, I cannot say, as I haven't used that lab, but in general it is not worth testing unless the results can give you specific treatment options to try. If the treatment options are rather easy and especially safe, it is often easier to just try them and see what happens. This can be done based on symptoms. Testing can be really helpful, but should be done selectively--as your questions seem to imply that you already know :-) > > > > > > Anita >
Guest guest
Guy - sorry I perhaps misunderstood - I thought your question referred more widely to allergy tests and sensitivities beyond gluten and casein. This is Breakspear's speciality and I think I trust them to provide good, if expensive, treatment for these issues, also I believe it is a recognised treatment. The picture is more complicated with Gluten and Casein and I don't know whether desensitising the body to an allergen is relevant to these - I think probably not, so probably best to do an exclusion diet for these and see what happens as others have suggested or try Houston Enzymes as an easier alternative if you don't think its a major issue. But quite often our kids have significant sensitivities beyond just gluten and casein in which case you either do a lengthy Feingold type exclusion and reintroduce things individually noting reactions or you try to find the allergens more quickly by testing. Then you can either exclude them - very difficult for eg Benzoates which are in tons of stuff naturally and artificially or difficult when your child is intolerant to lots of substances, or you habituate the body to them by using very low dose exposure so that it no longer produces an allergic response.
